We finished October down -2.20%. From the 64 Months of October, this ranked as 13th worst. This is also the first time we've closed down 3 consecutive months since the pandemic low of Mar-2020. Additionally this is October’s 5th worst 3-Month performance at -8.61%.

From the chart below, our MTD high was 2.07% while our MTD low was -3.98%


While we have closed the last 3 months down, we are still up 9.23% YTD. ...

Stocks started the week with a rally, and we've talked often about the strange positive Mondays streak, but here we are again with another Monday rally behind us, and four more trading days left in the week to try to hold onto those gains. We are starting a strong seasonal period for stocks, but it may not be that easy under the current circumstances, although stocks are quite oversold and relief rallies can be impressive. Another mixed, but mostly lower day for stocks on Friday, and the losses took the TSP stock funds down with them. The Dow and small caps each lost 1% on the day, the S&P 500 fell a half of a percent, while the Nasdaq was spared rallying on some big tech buying fueled by a 7% rally in Amazon. Bonds were flat and the dollar was down slightly.

The buy-and-hold method of investing has not been kind lately. The indices continue to shed prices and this week was similar to the previous. The S&P 500 spent some of the first half of the week in positive territory, but by Wednesday the bulls lost full control.

Earnings did not help those trying to catch the falling knife. A positive earnings report by Microsoft was overshadowed by a disappointing report by Alphabet.

Stocks opened lower on Thursday and never really made much of an attempt to into positive territory, although small caps showed some relative strength with yields falling. Big tech tech earnings have been good, but not good enough apparently, to justify how much they have been outperforming the rest of the market in recent months. Seasonality improves going forward, just as we see some indications that the 2023 bull market may be on its last legs.
