Today's Commentary (Short Term Outlook)

So far it's pretty quiet

Stocks were mostly flat yesterday and with the low volume trading, it is very difficult to interpret what is happening.

I don't see much overly negative, nor anything overly positive and this sideways action is about par for the course.  Any kind of consolidation after a big rally is generally healthy, but of course how a market reacts after a consolidation will tell the story, and that will likely happen after the New Year.

The C-fund was up 0.03%, the S-fund slipped 0.07%, and the I-fund dropped 0.62%.

No change in the S&P 500 situation.  It is at the top of a rising wedge and it could break out to the upside, as the Nasdaq did, or it can move back down to the lower support of the wedge.

The F-fund added another 0.14%, but it has not been a great month for the Bond fund as it is down 1.38% in December.  With bond yields moving almost straight up this month, perhaps January will be a little better for the F-fund as the yields may be due for a pullback.  When yields go down, bond prices and the F-fund generally go up.

This morning will actually be the deadline for us accepting new members for the TSP Talk AutoTracker, to be eligible for the 2010 annual prizes since you will need to establish your allocation for the first trading day in January by 12 noon ET today (Thursday).

Late late entries are always accepted, and will be eligible for monthly prizes throughout the year (as long as they were on the AutoTracker for the entire month and have logged in within the last 90-days.  See the rules for prize eligibility), but once the new year starts, we can no longer compare your return to members or other funds, who started on day one - hence you won't be eligible for any annual return considerations.

So, if you are interested in having your account's return tracked along with other members', please read this for more info: How to be included on the 2010 TSP Talk AutoTracker.

2009 AutoTracker members will automatically rollover into the 2010 provided they had logged in within the last 90-days, and / or made a post on the message board with the last 90-days.

If you have any questions, please
contact me.

Thanks for reading.  Best of luck in 2010, and we'll see you back here on Monday.  Happy New Year!
