Interfund Transfer 5/17 for 5/18/07

We got a buy signal from Trader Fred, we are on a buy signal in the sentiment survey system, so why am I still waiting? Time to act. I will make an interfund transfer this morning going to:

50% C, 30% S and 20% I fund.

I CONSIDER THIS A SHORT-TERM TRADE, so if you can not be nimble, you may want to pass on this one.

I am just getting into this game. I was looking at the buy signal for today transferring to C, S and I. Can you clear something up for me? The prices for all 3 of these funds are going down. So, if I transfered to them by noon as you indicated on you website, would I have bought these stocks at the price as of close today? if yes, I do not understand how I would earn money.

I sure would like to under stand this whole stocks thing. An associate of mine at work says, "It's simple, buy low and then sell them when they go up". I am confused.

Welcome Newlife! Yes, if the market is down today and you made the transfer by 12 noon ET today, you will be buying into the C, S and I funds at a lower price than you could have yesterday (which is good). If the market goes back up tomorrow or next week, you will make money on this trade.

I have to admit this trade is probably the most nerve-racking move I have made in a long time - if not ever. Most people get nervous buying when the market is sinking, not me. But nervous is good. My worst trades seem to come when I am most confident. I don't have that problem with this trade.

I also hate that I am selling the F fund because bonds are down again today and the F fund is on pace to lose a penny or two on the today. At least it looks like stocks will be down today as well, but it's early yet.

One of my guilty pleasures of reading this site is just people watching. How two perfectly normal people can react quite differently to the same stimulus. Stocks go up, and some people panic sell to "take a profit", while the next guy takes it as a sign of great things to come, and buys in again. Stocks tank, and some sell and get depressed...others buy thinking their price has finally been reached.

From my observations, you may be my mirror image, Tom. (Plus, we're both named Tom!). You get nervous when you are IN stocks, I get nervous when I'm OUT of stocks. I think my total time 100% out of stocks in the last 2 years has been....1 day.

You are right about this one being a nerve racking decision. The signals are very mixed right now- so I moved things around yesterday and today - in ways that I wouldn't normally. I too just jumped back 100% into stocks effective COB today- and I have to admit, your move jumping back in was one of the factors I took into account before deciding to do it. I was prepped to go 100% "G" today, until your move came over the wires, and I reassed everything I was seeing, and decided to take a risk.

I'll say this- at least it's still 12 years before I hit retirement age- so I have lots of time to make it up if it turns ugly tomorrow.

I'm more like you than you think. I never had a problem losing money during the ups and downs of the market. It's one of the reasons I started this site, to get people more active. But I found out that I do have a problem when someone loses money because of me. I know, I've been told many times to forget about that and do my own thing - but the fact is, it's tough. If the market goes down tomorrow, my email inbox will be full.

I'm also a betting man - and I went back into USM stocks yesterday.

Seems I've been on the wrong side all month. I've got a negative return for the month (which is not the norm for me.) Something's got to go right for me soon. I see TF's move in as a sign of good things to come.
