Thread: Scout333's TSP Contribution Spreadsheet

    Default Scout333's TSP Contribution Spreadsheet

Hello Tom, I saw your post re a spreadsheet which will let you put in bi-weekly contributions. I have one which will do that which I'm certainly willing to share as long as everyone realizes it is a work in progress. There are a few quirks- 1. When you put in the bi-weekly contributions in Col. E you need to put the daily shares prices in first (for the day the contribution is posted) then drop down one line, use the same date and share prices, and enter the contribution in Col. E for that line. The reason you have to do this is because the contributions are made after the share price changes for that day are implemented. 2. Every so often the total TSP balance will be off 1 cent up or down (haven't figured out why I just adjust to actual by using the contribution column). 3. When you open the spreadsheet you will get a circular formula message just cancel and keep on going. Feel free to modify to improve, etc. If you improve it please post here so others can benefit.

Just a quick tip for those who don't like the cluttered look of the split window- Select Window and the Remove Split option and it is much cleaner looking. I used it to show 12-31-2007 amounts for comparison purposes in my personal spreadsheet.

Posted spreadsheet without the split window. Just cleaner. Thanks Tom!

The link included in the quote above can be used to get the updated spreadsheet (without the circular reference). For those who want to fix their personal copy you can select Tools Options Calculation & Check the box by Iteration and change max number of iterations to 1 and maximum change amount to 1000. This should keep the circular reference from showing up. It was really annoying to me and probably many of you also. Happy investing!

Scout - thanks for the spreadsheet. I have entered my data and have started studying it very closely. I do have a question, though. Can you tell me what the "SAFE" column represents? I am trying to get a complete understanding of everything so that I can make better investment decisions.

    Thanks!!

Hello Happy, The SAFE column was just something I put in for a friend of mine. He was using a book by Robert Lichello "How to make a $ 1,000,000 in the stock market" I believe was the title, to rebalance his accounts. Basically if your stock funds increased by 10% or more move some to money market or bond funds (SAFE funds) if they decrease by 10% or more move some from the money market or bond funds back into stocks. Not sure how that works out in this extreme bear market climate. The SAFE column just adds up the C,S, & I funds and multipies by 10%. Hope that answers your question. Good luck! You're in the right place to learn. Lots of smart folks here!

Thanks for the explanation, that helps. Interesting concept...I will keep it in mind. Right now, I am being extra aggressive in my investments. Hopefully, it will pay off. I have a long time until retirement, so I am going all-out now.
