Thread: vote don't bash

  1. #1

    Default vote don't bash

    TSP Octogon anyone?

props to JTH for the idea, what do you think about a bashing thread?

no one gets dragged in, don't enter if you're not ready for it, police yourself or get what you deserve, it's up to you to tap out, the ref only stops it when you're getting killed, careful how far you go there are lots of witnesses.

    let's get it on.

Speaking ONLY as an MB member:

I'm a "make love, not war" type of person and I'm not sure that a bashing thread wouldn't spill over into other places on the MB. I'm a recovering political-opinion-posting-aholic because I saw how toxic it was for me and I think it was toxic to others as well. And I don't want to get something else problematic started.

So I vote no with a capital N. That said, I fully recognize that there are folks who like to participate in full contact cage fighting. I'm just not one of them. Unless I'm hormonal and riding my Harley.

I know I'll earn my Get out of Jail Free card one of these days, but somehow I think a Freeforall thread would make it dam near impossible to allow for the possibility of value in someone else's TSP-oriented thought processes if you're at noholdsbarred nuclear war with them in a standalone dedicated thread.

The main purpose and value in this site that Tom started for us is the free exchange of TSP and market-oriented info. If everyone ends up putting their least favorite person(s) on mental ignore if not software ignore, they could easlly miss out on info shared that would be helpful to their retirement goals. It's hard enough seeing the member-bashing going on routinely already, much less having a thread dedicated to loathing, disrespect and illwill among members. But that's just me. I vote N-O, NO.

I like TSPTalk and I think most people here are well-intentioned but if I followed their advice, I'd be hunkered down in my basement with a thousand cans of tuna fish.

I brought something like this up in the suggestions a year or two ago... only I went old school and called it the school yard.

    You go Lady...

Anyways…I'm not taking the soft approach, but Lady and Alevin make some pretty good points and I ALWAYS have admired some of their intuitiveness and common sense advice...I think they are right on about this one...Given I love to spar and I do it with usually a smile and an underlying sense of good humor and sometimes (not a lot) I can get down right vicious, before Tom busts my chops for picking on a liberal...That being said...I think it would be a bad idea for the general health and well being of this MB...

Jim (James) and I are friends outside this MB...However on board, we spar and pick at each other (I've said this before)..I hold nothing back when I disagree with him and I except nothing less from him...But I believe and hope he also feels the same way about me...that's just how we play here...Given that understanding we can still remain friends...But Others may not be able to separate their political and social spats and discussions as devil's advocates to one another, and those fiery emotions may bleed over into mutual understandings on more benign subjects such as the markets and funds as Alevin so eloquently pointed out.

So my answer is NO for all concerned reasons.

    That is all

I would say that any comment that is made on any thread, and for any reason, has proven to be wholly open to being bashed. Therefore any thread has the potiential to be a bashing thread.

If anything can be misinterpreted ... then it likely will be -- especially by any reader that has any pre-existing negative feelings or suspicions regarding the writter.

The 3 greatest drawbacks to a 'Bashing Thread' is 1. Those most eager to challenge and bash others will keep it going. 2. A Gang mentality will develop and the 'loser' will have many attacking him (or her) with increasing aggression. 3. When (and if) the fun wears off it will carry over to other threads more easily.

I'd say the best thing we can do is live in peace with each other.

What moron came up with this stupid, idiotic, short sighted, racist, sexist, xenophobic, homophobic, anti-semitic, un American, and hairbrained idea?

Just kidding Burrocrat, but you can see how quickly a thread with no holds barred would get out of hand. Best to keep it somewhat civil in the political threads.

I have many drive buy bullet holes in my walls - no harm done really by any of them. Attention of any kind is appreciated. But I do like to bite back.
