"Area 51" is just one of those things put out there to make people think that is where they should look.
Some of us know where the REAL secret squirrel stuff is actually located.

Yes we are an open society, but there are some things we don't need to know and other things we shouldn't know about.
May the force be with us.
There are very few things people "need" to know. We don't "need" to explore space. We didn't "need" to explore Mars.
But true, there are things regarding proper government secrets that we, generally, shouldn't know.
But let's be specific to the topic of this thread in which you posted:
Let's suppose, for the sake of discussion, that you are the decider of what society needs to know; and of what society should know.
Now, should society be allowed to simply know whether our government has credible evidence that extraterrestrial life exists? If your decision would be 'no,' why not? [Note: the question only refers to knowledge of existence (yes we do have evidence; or no we don't). Not access to the evidence itself, and not revealing details of the evidence.]
Thanks.

I highly recommend getting to know who Dr. Chuck Missler is and his very deep thoughts in this broad subject. I also recommend L.A. Marzulli, Steve Quayle, Tom Horn to name a few. Lots of videos online from these folks.
