As I recall, it was down to just him and me the round where I got knocked out, everyone else had folded. He went all-in big gun, before the flop (I think) and I chose to do so in response. I go KO'd. but he'll have to confirm, that is what I think I remember how it happened.

kuz's "last game" chart is correct, i ko'd winter but i don't remember either of our cards. kuz took out gata, and attitude dropped everybody else.

berry had the AK to your AT, and you drew out. a few hands earlier you had Ax to my AK and mine held up. that is about par for that matchup, be very careful with big slick because it gonna lose the race about half the time. but a 50% shot at winning the hand is better than say getting in the same race with QJ instead. in those shots you want 'overs', overcard(s) that are higher than your opponents so if one catches you win, and if neither players catches a card you win, but of course any undercard for your opponent can hit too and bonk you're out. that is poker, you can't control the hand in the moment but you can control the situations you get yourself into and expect them to perform close to the average in the long run.

this is probably the biggest dilemma in poker for beginners, why get into a coin flip race then? because if you don't often enough, if you sit and wait for a big hand with a definite advantage in your favor then two things happen: 1) the blinds and your opponents aggression will bleed your chip stack dry while you are waiting for your magic hand to arrive, and 2) when you catch your magic hand your opponent will know it and simple fold giving you no opportunity to get your chips back.

the ending hand was a beautiful classic matchup like that in the end stages of a tourney, me A8 suited v tom 77 pocket pair.
tom is ahead preflop on this hand 53% to 47%, and when all my chips went in and the pot matched, tom had i think it was $108 left out of about $10,000 in the middle, a pure race, nearly 50/50 and for all the marbles, electric, you don't know what is going to happen but you know something is going to happen, soon.

as it played out the flop comes 3 small-medium cards and two of them are diamonds. that leaves me 'outs' and like kuz said 'lots of outs'. of the unseen cards in the deck: there are 3 aces, 3 eights, and 9 diamonds that win the hand for me, 15 cards out of 45 left in the deck kill the game. a one in three shot after the flop. this time they didn't hit, but goldang if they did the tourney was basically over because tom is forced allin for the next several hands due to the blinds and i could lose 9 hands in a row in a blind race before i get taken out. a pure math play without ever looking at the cards.

very exciting poker last night, regardless of who won. i love the game.

if you run the A8 suited v 77 with two of my flush cards on the board after the flop through a hand calculator, you will see that after the flop i am now going to hit one of my outs and win that hand 54% to 46% favorite. so the metric has switched (or flopped) on the flop which is probably why they call it the flop. that probability plus the pot odds to call the allin bet are what makes holdem poker, you will win the hands on average the same percentage of the time, but if you can win $5000 chips instead of $500 chips on the hand then you make money over time, the game is designed to reward aggression and punish those who hesitate or make improper odds calls. over time. but anybody can be a hero for a day. it is a beautiful game.

when the turn card is no help to either of us i still have 15 cards to win, but only one chance (the river) to catch them as opposed to two chances on the turn. now it is tom ahead again, at 65% to 35%, dang it turned on me, which is probably why they call it the turn. i'm telling you there is a brutal deceptiveness to this game. it changes fast.

the heads up play was fun to watch, even if we didn't get to see many cards on the table, it was certainly a risk tolerance match. Can get very frustrating if you get a string of poor cards, but both players kept their cool

That tone had been set earlier, I believe with 5 people still left, when we had a string of all-in preflops.
