I drink wine quite a bit. Maybe even more than my fair share.

    1. Don't buy wine in a box. Stick to your beer at this point.
    2. Nakedwine.whatever. I got one of these in the mail. I would avoid it at all costs as I think this is a way to sell you some cheap $40 wine for $60 but shows you a $160 value.
    3. You will be on some list forever and you may be joining a monthly/yearly club.

    4. Never buy cheap wine. Better to drink less wine less often but when you do drink it have quality. On the other days, drink your beer or mixed drinks.

    Good luck.

I mostly drink reds. Don't like any hint of sweetness. Since I'm in N Cali I'm trying to wear down the bosses and let casual Friday afternoons include wine and beer. But it's got to be work-grade, like light beer or boxed wine. That would make it ok, I argue.

But a good, robust red that goes great with BBQ Ribs and other hearty dishes is Earthquake Zinfandel...or Earthquake Petite Sirah.
Its one of those wines that newcomers to red wine tend to like,, big, thick, smokey and a little sweet...but still well structured enough to win wine competitions.

But the French would scoff at such an overly robust, one dimensional wine. (lol).

My current favorite red is Chateau Lanessan 2010 , a nice French wine a little strong but worth it. At this time of posting I am drinking a Russian River Pliny the Elder hard to get, but supposedly worth it.

    Ahha...Chateau Lanessan???
    You know your wine.

I saw the 2010 at a store and because that was an incredibly warm year in Bordeaux, its ripeness and Alc content is thru the roof.
Was tempted to buy it but passed in favor of my favorite (under $40), but little known Bordeaux from the Fronsac region...Chateau La Vielle Cure....definitely the "cure all" for any red meat dishes, including lamb.

You've peaked my interest...I'll pick up the Lanessan next go around...interesting history about that winery...passing on attending the 1855 classification taste taste that would undoubtedly have it classed in a $100 area...but now you can pick it up for a steal...less than $25 in some stores.

Decoy pinot noir, trust me. I had wine from the value rack to stuff that was over $300 and this one is one of my favs, it'd be one of my top 3 choices even if price wasn't an issue (it's around $20-$25 at most places, well worth it though)

Had the 2010 Lanessan with Collette steak tonight. Poured thru decanter...very ripe and "fat" with high Alc content for French wine (14%).
British call those ultra ripe Bordeaux's "Fat Bastards" and that's what this was right off the pouring. Very ripe, full bodied but fairly one-dimensional. However, after wafting and decanting in the glass for an hour, some nice complexities of cigar box and spice started coming thru in between the ripe fruit.

Definitely a wine to decant for an hour before drinking. It was a very nice wine, and I'm glad your post tempted me to try it.

Now you'll have to try the 2010 La Vielle Cure from Fronsac and let me know what you think.

My neighbor had a subscription to The Wine Spectator and they listed reasonably priced and highly rated wines, I found it on line and you should try it they seem to be right most of the time.

Chateau Montelena Chardonnay. I treat myself to this one 2 - 3 times a year...

    http://www.wine-searcher.com/find/mo...california+usa

It's about $47 a bottle in my area but I see on the above page it's cheaper in other states.

If you've ever seen the movie "Bottle Shock" it's based on the wine tasting contests in the 70's in France where California's Chateau Montelena wines surprised folks by winning some of the major categories and it put California wines on the map.

Another nice Chardonnay in the $10 range that I drink more often is Alamos from Argentina. They also have a nice Torrentes.

They don't allow wines from outside Utah to be mailed into the state so I miss out on a lot good deals. Anyone ever use http://wine.woot.com ?

I drink reds too, nnuut... ...
