personally, i don't care. it's a win-win either way for me.
unemployment insurance - commute costs - student loan deferral = more net take home and free time off.
with the job search requirements of unemployment, sooner or later i will find a job that pays more than the one i got laid off from.
if i get called back to work at my old employer before then without back pay that's good because i love my job.
if i get called back to work at my old employer before then with back pay that's better because that's more money than i made on unemployment (which i have to pay back), but i still get to keep the free time off.
