    U.S. Jobless Claims Edge Up but Remain Low in Tight Labor Market
    Economists expect employers to continue holding on to workers

    Initial jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, increased to a seasonally adjusted 248,000 last week from 225,000 a week earlier, the Labor Department said Thursday. The four-week moving average, which smooths volatility, fell slightly to 243,250.

    Jobless claims total 232,000, slightly less than expected; Q4 GDP revised up to 7%

    Jobless claims for the week ended Feb. 19 totaled 232,000, slightly less than expected.

    Continuing claims hit their lowest level in nearly 52 years.

    GDP increased at a 7% annualized pace in the fourth quarter, closing out a year with the strongest growth since 1984.

    Jobless claims total 215,000, fewer than expected; productivity rises 6.6%

    Initial claims for unemployment insurance totaled 215,000, below the 225,000 estimate.

    That was the lowest level since Jan. 1 and comes a day ahead of the closely watched nonfarm payrolls report for February.

    A separate report showed Q4 productivity up 6.6%, slightly less than expected, but with a rise in unit labor costs that was well ahead of estimates.

    Jobless claims increased by 185,000 and were up more than expected.

    Initial jobless claims rose to 185,000 for the week ended April 9, an increase of 18,000 from the previous week and above the estimate of 172,000. Continued claims, which run a week behind the headline number, fell by 48,000 to 1.475 million.

    U.S. weekly jobless claims grind lower amid tight labor market

    Initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell 2,000 to a seasonally adjusted 229,000 for the week ended June 18, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 227,000 applications for the latest week.

    Jobless claims edge up to highest since January; planned layoffs soar; trade deficit hits 2022 low

    Initial filings for unemployment benefits totaled 235,000 for the week ended July 2, a gain of 4,000 from the previous period.

    The U.S. imbalance for goods and services declined to $85.5 billion, from $86.7 billion in April.

    Another report indicated that companies announced 32,517 layoffs in June, a 57% jump from a month ago and the highest total since February 2021.

    Jobless claims rise again in another sign that labor market is cooling

    Initial claims totaled 251,000 for the week ended July 16, up 7,000 from the week before and above the 240,000 Dow Jones estimate.

    That was the highest weekly level since mid-November.

    The Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index fell to a reading of -12.3, and produced the lowest employment reading since May 2021.

    Jobless claims edge lower as Fed looks to cool labor market

    Jobless claims totaled 250,000 for the week ended Aug. 13, down 2,000 from the previous week and below the 260,000 Dow Jones estimate.

    Continuing claims, which run a week behind the headline number, totaled 1.437 million, an increase of 7,000.

    In other economic news, the Philadelphia Fed reported that its monthly manufacturing survey for August rose to a reading of 6.2

    Jobless claims total 232,000, the lowest level in two months

    Jobless claims totaled a seasonally adjusted 232,000 for the week ended Aug. 27, below the estimate for 245,000.

    Continuing claims increased to 1.44 million, up 26,000 from the previous week.

    Unit labor costs increased 9.3% over the past four quarters, the highest level since the first quarter of 1982.

    Unemployment claims continue to fall
