Thread: Windows 10

My oversimplified take ... I'm on Windows 8.1 and will roll to 10 as soon as possible. Already have my Get Windows 10 app running on the desktop. I'm in the "Anything's going to be better" stage of thinking. If you're not in 8.1, you might just wait for them to sort things out.

My 2 cents - as a computer geek...

If you traverse the web site displayed in the 'Get Windows 10' notification you will find a 'Learn more on windows.com' link. Click that link (Notification: It is really me getting access to your TSP account and moving money to mine). You will then get to the 'Windows 10 FAQ' home page.

The first FAQ - 'When will I get my free upgrade?' - presents the option to download and use the 'Media Creation Tool'. That will download a tool that you can use to create the bootable install disk for Windows 10.

Personally, I am going to use this opportunity to refresh my hardware with an SSD and perhaps more memory. I have my Windows 7 Product Key sticker on my box so I should be able to perform a fresh install according to the FAQ.

As far as bugs and compatibility I tend to view things this way: It is obvious OPM entrusted our security clearance records to an obsolete applications running with an obsolete database engine on and obsolete operating system. Yeah, hang back for a while might be smart short term (the bootable media will help there if concerned), but hanging back has dangers of its own. If you are waiting for some drivers on an obsolete peripheral than you will be left hanging. Then all your self-porn will be on the internet and advertised the next time you type your LinkedIn password. That would be awesome!!! Right there on your professional job page...
Lookin' up at the 'G Fund'!!!

I downloaded my pro copy on Wednesday, with the installer that is out there (not the windows update way).

Haven't installed it yet but probably will this weekend

I'll wait (as many smart corporations do) for it to come with my next laptop...whenever that'll be.

There's no greater risk in waiting as security updates are still being issued for W7 and W8; and if you are the US NAVY, Win XP as well--just as security updates will have to be issued for W10. And if history is any indication, there will be more holes found in W10 than older versions...since it is so new.

Oh, and uh...Snowden wasn't lying about Microsoft and the NSA, btw.

Thanks. I see that if you have pro already, the free upgrade will be pro! Still waiting though...for other reasons.

I Installed it today. I like it quite a bit so far. Only bug I noticed was when I right click on the sound icon in the task bar, the menu is blank... although you can still click the options if u can judge about where they would be (I use this often)

I mainly use my desktop for Microsoft office, Web browsing, and media. I dual monitor with my living room TV as my 2nd display to watch streamed movies/tv snice i dont have cable tv. And I like how windows 10 handles it. Both displays are treated as they are different desktops, with their own start menu and task bar.

And now I can choose between desktop browser versions and an app version of most things I use, like tv networks... abc, espn, NFL network, etc.

During setup, if you take the express options, I believe you will be opted into sharing a bunch of data with Microsoft behind the scenes. I chose the customize option and turned them all off

Fyi, the main reason I'm not waiting at all is because I recently wiped my computer to a fresh install so it was already pretty bare. And I'm going to need to rebuy Microsoft Office since I don't have a disk, just a key and origionally down loaded the copy. Plus I don't mind a few bugs... Im used to using beta versions.

Are you sure you can't re-download office and use your same key?

    Thanks for the post btw!

I tried. Supposedly you can... This is the link for 2010 and 2007: https://products.office.com/en-us/do...ffice-products
    This is for 2013: https://officesetup.getmicrosoftkey.com/

But I get a message along the lines of "Product Key provided represents a product which is not eligible for free download"

Had the same issue several years ago, when I went to windows 7 I believe. I believe its because I didn't pay extra for a hard copy. I had saved the ISO file... but that harddrive failed a several months ago

Not too worried about it... Home use office pro is what... $10?

On edit: To be clear... office was removed when I reinstalled Win 7, not from the Win 10 install. During install there was an option to retain user data and programs (Actually I think it said apps), but I hadn't reinstalled office prior to the Win 10 install.

OpenOffice just won't do it for ya, huh?

Says it's $399 here for pro:

Buy Microsoft Office Professional 2013 - Microsoft Store

Unless you mean $10/mo. for that Office 365 thing...or something else...$10 since you already have a valid key?

(Especially for Windows. Especially before upgrading.) I know you know this, but the first thing I do with important files is upload them to a secure/end-to-end encrypted cloud. MEGA is free for the first 50 GB (Research the origins of MEGA and its creator, Kim Dotcom); or maybe burn them to DVD:

I suppose my Netscape 3.1 with 256 bit encryption, and windows 3.1 are both about ready to be replaced, eh?

At least the NSA can't break those easily.

Microsoft Home Use Program - Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013. The software suite includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, Access and more!

most current gov employees qualify for microsoft home use program. the thinking goes your employer has already paid for the license and you may as well have access to the software at home in case you need to do some last minute tweaking on a powerpoint or spreadsheet before tomorrow's conference presentation. $10 download to cover admin costs of the program, hard copy discs available for shipment cost extra.

LOL...I wouldn't be so sure...but you've got bigger problems than the NSA.
