Thread: New Facebook Page

  1. #1

    Default New Facebook Page

    Like me.

After several half hearted attempts at creating a Facebook business page for TSP Talk, I think I have finally set one up the way I want it. Blog posts, some charts, comments, etc., will show up on the page.

Being 40-something, I have not fully grasped the need for facebook, but apparently if you don't have one, you are falling behind the rest of the modern world.

From what I understand I won't be able to have a "friendly" Facebook URL until we get 25 "likes". Having just created the page I have 0.

So, until I get the 25, the current link will be... http://www.facebook.com/pages/TSP-Talk/164503663590403
If you have a Facebook page, and have a minute, please check it out, and if you don't mind, hit the "like" button so I can get that friendlier URL created.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

    Thanks! I appreciate it!

This has been a Zuckerberg faux pah that has generated much ire and skepticism.

Ire and scepticism, yeah. I've had some isssues with the privacy settings. I think that "liking" someone or something makes you instant friends with everyone else who "likes" it.

I joined mainly for a high school reunion group and stuck around because of a couple of relative's pages. I found at one point everything I posted on the group page was showing up for public view. Not exactly cool as it was supposed to be a closed group. Another issue is that what you see on your page isn't necessarily what others, friends and non friends, see.

Something facebook did this week was force an app called Instant Personalization on us. It automatically shares everything with yelp, pandora and probably others. You have to search for it and turn it off.

Looking at the help function for privacy leads you to blogs about how great social sharing is and how you should use the recommended privacy settings. Finding out how to actually shut something off ain't easy.

Yeah, I'll like you and see what happens privacy wise. Should be an interesting social experiment.

Thanks. I always feel like I am walking on egg shells when in facebook. You never know what each click will do. The kids seem to get it, but they are fearless and don't always understand what they are subjecting themselves to. Us older folks are a little more leery and are not as excited to have everyone we know see our "stuff".

Of course TSP Talk's page on Facebook will be very basic. We shouldn't have anything on there, or see anyone post anything, that would be considered personal - except for perhaps some personal opinions about the market. So, for that purpose, I am not too worried about privacy settings at the moment.

    Oops!... http://www.facebook.com/pages/TSP-Talk/164503663590403

You can also do a search of TSP Talk and it's the one with our logo. There's also a TSPTALK on there from wikipedia.

I used to work there - 25 years. I left in 2008, but the wife is still there.

Were you looking at the Wikipedia page? James had created that Wiki page and I think the facebook page is automatically created from Wiki. not sure.

I deleted my old TSP Talk page because it was set up as a personal account by mistake, instead of a business account. I finally figured things out. Well, almost. Instead of having friends, you get "likes".

    Tom,

Did you work on the computer systems there...the old Sperry/Unisys systems?

Yup. I was a computer operator on the Unisys a long time ago before becoming a COBOL programmer for the system. Then moved on to other systems.
