Since Burro invited me to join in, here goes... Honestly, I think it's a cool idea, and I'd gladly buy 2-4 coins as a novelty, but I don't think I'm ready to drop $500 on it. I've been DCAing into fake silver (SLV) for a few months now. Maybe I should sell that and buy some of this here pricier real silver. Hmm. My mind is decidedly undecided at this point.

first, i want to thank tsptalk and all of you for allowing to indulge my silver fantasy. i really like silver. i really like gold too, but i haven't been able to afford it since selling all my gold coins to pay the divorce lawyer and started raising my kid. i don't see a time anywhere in the near future where i will be able to afford it again either.

have you actually ever held real silver or gold in your hot little hands? try it, but fair warning the magic metals have a powerful pull. from an investment standpoint, physical metals in any significant quantity are a liability in terms of storage logistics and liquidation for profit terms. and paper SLV and GLD, while more convenient in trading venues are just paper, bets made on the exchange. if a time were ever to come when you would need to use the metal for barter or purchases, a brokerage statement saying you have a bunch in some financial institution's warehouse will do you no good as that is exactly the time when taking physical delivery would be delayed or impossible.

so what is silver good for then? making change, giving it away, trading for a nother real item that has immediate usable value in your situation. i know a guy who has a 100 oz brick of silver he uses as a door stop in his shop, no crap, it sits there on the concrete floor and holds the door open. i always thought that was cool. he traded a flatbed farm truck to a neighor for it decades ago. the truck is now a rusted hulk in the boneyard and doesn't run, but the silver still holds open the door. that's a $2,000 doorstop.

so silver can be a good thing to have around in the right quantity, too much and you are sequestering value where it cannot grow efficiently, too little and you may not be able to god forbid pay the ferryman in a pinch.

but i like silver and i'm going to keep buying it. i have bought silver since i was a kid when i would take my paper route money down to the jeweler and fork over 6 precious dollars for an ingot. everybody has habits, what are yours? some people think nothing of dropping $20 on smokes and a six pack of good beer. some folks really like chocolate. or fancy shoes. or going to the movies. some people like silver.

try this little experiment: give someone you know a $20 bill for a job well done, and then a week later give them an ounce of silver. check back with them in a few months. guess which one lights up their eyes? guess which one they turn over and rub with their thumb and start dreaming? guess which one they will hang on to? liquid enough to be an asset that can be used when needed, but not so liquid it gets squandered down at the 7-11 for a couple chili dogs and a slurpee.

the goal for the tsptalk silver rounds is 500 oz, total cost shared equally per ounce. we may not have 500 takers yet, but we can start a list, and when we get to 500 then we can buy.

    burro 25,
    tsptalk 50,
    james 25?,
    rlundy 25,
    sensei 4,

anyone else want in on the silver train?

if tom starts giving them away as autotracker prizes i'm going to get way more serious about my investment returns.

Well Burro- speaking of Silver, you can always melt it down and make bullets out of it.

That way you are protected against Warewolves, AND the Lone Ranger will be your friend.

I'm interest, but let silver drop some more to get better price and have to wait until more peoples interest. I was stamps collector (after spend about $5K for more than 20 years ago, and my last stamp collection was Pricess Diana), but not collect with metal. I have only one silver coins as a gift from my Commander for EOD anniversity. I don't know how much the stamps worth now, if I can unload my stamps then I will load up with coins and don't have to worry about water or moisture damage.

Yesterday, I noticed heavy volumes on Options calls for March 2014 for $112 on TLT, so look like F fund will be up until March. Need to recoup some lost from I fund for get out too early. Let wait and see on bonds!

Last November I started buying 10 - 1oz Silver Eagles and a couple of Holiday or Birthday Rounds at the start of every month. A little retirement diversification and some stocking stuffers and birthday card candy from the old man...

Anyway, I would be a buyer for sure of at least 20, which is a sleeve, but maybe more over time. Hopefully when you have the 500 takers lined up we can rely on someones ace charting and TA skills to buy at a dip!

    Thanks,
    Danny

That's the way I've been buying it, in 20 piece sleeves.

Burro said something about 25 per tube:
indicating two tubes of 25 oz each
Burro, is that something you were told... they come in 25 per tube?

The thing to do would be to find some old duffer that was saving pre-1965 quarters and 50 cent pieces - they are all silver. As well as old silver dollars. My younger brother stole my quarters to put in the coke machine when he was a teenager - just my luck.

My grandfather had the foresight to save many. I was a baseball card collector as a kid, so when he died I inherited his coins and stamps. I have a file cabinet full of his stuff that I haven't looked at in years. I believe there is a roll of mint-condition Kennedy half-dollars in there somewhere. I think I'll take a look tonight.

after looking at several silver sites, i settled on northwest territorial mint, Silver Bars, Silver Coins, Gold Coins and Bars, Palladium and Platinum Bullion Available to Buy.

if you buy from the retail website you pay spot + premium + shipping and insurance for existing minted rounds in any quantity. if you buy from the bullion deptartment shipping and insurance are free but you must buy a minimum quantity. minimum quantity varies by product (today's spot prices at $21.25 are):

american eagles: 60 coins (3 tubes of 20) at $25.52 at a premium of $4.27 per oz.
canadian maples: 75 coins (3 tubes of 25) at $ 24.99 at a premium of $3.73 per oz.
pan-am hammers (private mint): 50 coins (2 tubes of 25) at $22.69 at a premium of $1.44 per oz.
nwtm scales or divisable stagecoaches (private mint): 50 coins (2 tubes of 25) at $22.67 at a premium of $1.42.

spot prices change by the minute so premiums are off by a few pennies. obviously only american eagles come in tubes of 20. canadians and private mint coins come in tubes of 25. premiums over spot on eagles and maples are about $4.00 over spot per coin and private mint jobs are at about $1.50 per coin over spot. that is one one of the decisions of any potential purchase, is it worth $2.50 per ounce for a recognizable gov coin gaurantee or do you want max silver for your buck?

i'm not suggesting any of those pre-minted solitions. i am trying to get tsptalk private minted coins with the tsptalk logo and motto design on the obverse and either the logo or tsptalk.com on the reverse. private custom minted coins require: minimum 500 coins in tubes of 25 (20 tubes) at $1.50 over spot per coin plus $2,000 for creation of the original tsptalk dies to mint the custom coins. that's an extra $4.00 over spot per coin on an initial order of tsptalk custom mints. tom would own the dies and after that , subsequent runs of custom coins would only be at the private rate of $1.50 over spot vs. eagles or maples.

the $2,000 for the initial creation of tsptalk strike dies is an estimate based on my verbal description of the design to the sales representative because i would not submit a drawing out of respect for tsptalk copyright and it eventually became clear i was lacking the $15,000 required to plunk down to get the job started. i can talk good sometimes but a bluff only goes so far before everybody knows you're broke. hey, i tried and got pretty far.

there may be other solutions or other mints, and i can get eagles or maple leafs or privates from a number sources in a number of quantities at a number of designs. i am looking for tsptalk custom minted rounds and am looking for a solution until i hit the lotto and buy the whole batch myself. but that is just my read on the possibilities and i'm open to suggestions.

that is why i suggested buyin at multiples of 25 rounds. also the 500 round batch entails dividing it up and shipping (+ insurance and handling fees) to individual cooperators. that should probably be tsptalk because it's his design and website. plus i think everybody knows if a monster box of silver was shipped to me it would be all like 'hell ya, off to mexico, buy rosetta stone spanish for my smart phone, toes in the watter ass in the sand, gotta catch me if you want me to hang'. i'm telling you, silver and gold have a special pull that is hard to resist. so tom is definately the man to hold and distribite any potential shipment. bit my money is good and i'm in for 25 rounds.

ok, updating the potential interest list for a purchase 500 oz of custom minted tsptalk silver 1 oz rounds at $1.50 over spot with approx $2,000 original die fee charge:

    tsptalk: 50
    burro: 25
    james: 25, maybe more
sensei: 4, maybe more if he hawks his grandpa's legacy
    rlundy: 25
danny: 20, and he's right there are chartist's on this sight that can help time the purchase for max return
    bronco07: 25
swavet: 20, maybe more if he can hawk his stamp collection
birchtree: 0, because he's mad at his brother for stealing his lunch money, but maybe

so that's 194/500. we're making good progress here. did i get that right? update pledge quantities or remove yourself from the list if i misheard you. remember, i won't ever touch any of it except my money i send to tom for the collective and whatever i get back in silver after paying my share and tom divvies it up minus expenses.

also, if you have silver currently in any form i suggest you consider holding it. the nwt mint will buy it back at current spot and melt it down and stamp you new rounds + premium, but that is a loser because you send in silver and get back less silver in a different form. i won't do that because i like my current silver pieces too much, each one has a history.

almost 40% of the way there, i think we can i think we can.
