  1. Default tomatomio's Account Talk

Hi, all. I'm new to the site and am trying to figure out what I should do with my TSP.

I'm 42 years old with 18 years of federal service. I'm a GS14 but will become a GS15 in 1.5 weeks(!). I've been contributing since I was able to (if I recall correctly, you needed to wait for 2 open seasons when I first started), and I've been maxing out for probably 14 or so years. My TSP is worth 600K.

Since they created the L funds, that's what I've used, since they do the re-balancing for me. I'm currently 100% invested in L2030.

I guess I'm looking for suggestions on what to do. I know that I won't have the time/interest in micromanaging my account, but perhaps I should move into L2040? (When they first made the L funds, I think 2030 was the furthest out option, and I haven't touched it since.) Should I add in more stocks? Something else?

Welcome to the Forum tomatomio, plenty of advice here but it's up to you to decide if it's good or bad advice. You are well on your way to a great retirement, 600K isn't rotten Tomatos! Congratulations on your promotion, my last promotion was when I retired, don't work but still getting paid was my last and the best one. Best of luck with your TSP!!!!!!

    tomatomio,

Welcome aboard. I would join the autotracker just to see how other folks are doing. nnuut is right that there is all kinds of information available here. You will get a lot of opinions but no one will tell you what to do. That's your choice and decision. It looks like you have done pretty good playing the L2030. I haven't done much research in the "L" funds, I pretty much stay in the "S" fund. Good luck and don't be afraid to ask questions.
May the force be with us.

Welcome to the Forum, tomatomio. 600K is great! I personally only know a lucky few who managed to retire with that much and they were GS12s.

It looks like the L Fund is working for you, so I would stick with it if you don't want to make a lot of moves. That's what they are for; set it and forget it. Alternatively you can change between the various L Funds at times depending on when you want to be more aggressive/conservative. The trick is to find the investing style you are comfortable with. You want to be able to sleep at night without worrying that your retirement is going down the drain. Your emotions are your own worst enemy here.

From one newb to another, Welcome aboard! If I could have $600K when I turn 42 years old (about 10 years from now), that would be a dream come true!! Based on your post, sticking with the L2030 is probably best for you. You definitely have enough time until retirement to be more aggressive if you prefer though.

The L2050 has done well since it's inception, it's a little more aggressive than the L2030 and L2040, but it still re-balances itself, which it seems you prefer.

Whatever you decide, good luck! You are in an awesome spot for 42!!

Just remember the AutoTracker is just a tool. It gives you some insight how other people manage their TSP account. Everyone has to find their comfort zone.
