Thread: Leaving TSP

    Default Leaving TSP

Almost certain about leaving TSP and moving it all to a Vanguard IRA using instructions per this website:
    https://www.barfieldfinancial.com/ne...nsfer-a-how-to

Someone said to not move all of it and keep a little in TSP but why? Once you move money out you can't move it back into TSP, so what's the point of having anything in TSP once you've made the decision to cut ties? I realize most places don't have the safety of the G fund but in my experience moving money in and out of the C/S/I or whatever into G and trying to time the market for safety never works out and causes extra stress which I don't need in retirement. I'd rather have it in a place that I can't mess with it from day to day and I don't have to deal with TSP's antiquated rules with their noon cut-off time, their crappy web site, etc

So other than the safety of the G fund, what are any drawbacks to leaving TSP? What are any benefits to leaving "Some" amount in TSP? Thanks.
P.S. My wife and I did some comparisons and learned that TSP's costs were higher than Vanguard's (another reason to leave TSP)

I thought about this as well.

At the time I moved funds out of TSP, I wanted to do a portion, but their website was so jacked up, I only had the choice to move it all, so it was their loss, not mine. My only concern is I like to have my money spread out. Once I'm collecting from the IRA, in the unlikely event I lost access to Vanguard, I want some level of access to other funds. The same reason I have more than one bank.

After the Crypto lack-of-regulation fiasco, and the regional banking crisis, I've developed a deep distrust of everything finance.

With Edward Jones I'm pretty flexible. If I leave money in the TSP I'll be getting two check later next year once I have to start taking out money from my 401k and TSP. For me that's a hassle. I'd rather deal Edward Jones. I have an issue I can call and go to the office down the street. Don't want to deal with ignorant TSP folks and spend hours on the phone.
May the force be with us.

So far I've been happy with Vanguard running my other accounts. This will be just one more. All the accounts took a hit last year but they are coming back. And I didn't need to do a thing! One thing I did learn is this will be a Traditional IRA I'm moving it to which appears to be the simplest option. The other thing is never to completely close TSP out. Once you fully cut the cord you can't get back in. I will probably just leave a little in TSP in case I would ever want to transfer money back into it (not likely but it's an option). From the web site apparently all you need to keep in as a minimum is $200.

TSP is no longer the lowest fee option, but the difference is very negligible. Only thing with G fund is it's guaranteed and possibly a better return than money markets. Money market funds could fold, though very unlikely. Not something I have interest in, but you could do CD ladders in retirement and that would give you guaranteed returns with risk spread over time.

The top reason to leave is the ability to withdraw from the whatever fund you want in a real brokerage account. Read up on sequence of return risk and the hazards of drawing down from equities as opposed to cash in a bear market. It might not make a difference short term, but by time you hit 20 years in retirement, it could be the difference between steak or spaghetti O's for dinner.

What fund companies offer now as far as financial advice is impressive. Even the robo advisor options take out a most of the guesswork. TSP has none of that to offer. Every seminar I've attended on TSP is just a CYA call about what each fund is and how we need to consult a tax advisor for our particular situation. Well, if that's the case, then what's the point? Just transfer it into a real brokerage account and let their algorithms tell you the best withdrawal strategy for your needs while everyone who stuck with TSP is complains on message boards.

Thought I had a problem with the Financial Institution page (missing scroll bar on right side to access all the element son the page) to enter the physical address but logging out and then back on "fixed" the problem.
