Thread: What Will You Do When You Retire?

Default What Will You Do When You Retire?

    Current Ages: 56.16 and 57.42
Years of Service: 30 and 29.50
Plan: Retire by April 2016 at 57 and 58
Both will retire with only 30 years of SS contributions by EOY.

Now that we are nearing retirement, we have always wondered what are we going to do upon retirement?...

We have always said that we will tour the US and the world when We retire. But when they are done and over with, what do we do with our time?

Spouse has no problem with that..as long as there is at least a piece of arable land, life will be sweet...
or bring him close to the water and he'll be fishing...swimming

What about me? I hate gardening, swimming and fishing! Why? Because i don't like being outdoors during the day..only when I am on a cruise..

Maybe I should look for a part time job and complete the required 35 years for Social Security?
if that's the case, I might as well not to retire.

Maybe I should volunteer my services to some charitable organizations?
Maybe I should go back to the Philippines and make up for lost time with family?
Maybe I am not ready to retire yet?

How about you? Do you know what you'll be doing when you retire?

Why do you have to be naked always, Burro?
just because we were born that way doesn't mean we have to be naked all the time...lol
and why Philippines? I hope not something derogatory.. Don't offend me Burro!

    why?

because i am a water baby. it calls to me. it is my element. if you don't like it you don't have to look. and it's close to water in my eventual desired latitude range. the girls are pretty everywhere so i am not prejudiced if that is your concern. i like them all. life (and beauty) is where you make it.

We moved to a place in Washington State that we both loved and thought was heaven. It is...during spring, summer, and early fall but the winters get to you, especially as you put a few more years on.

Family is good...IF you are really close to them. IF not, don't expect things to change.

Because reality wasn't as we had expected in our "idealistic" construct, I went back to work in the private sector for three years moving to three different cities during that time continuing our journey for the best place to appease both of us. In the end, I gave my wife most of what she wanted and negotiated time and money for the things I want. Not perfect, but we now live in a great place with lots of cool stuff for both of us BUT it's not perfect.

Enjoy the ride! It makes the journey that much more fun.

FS -reading your response, I can safely surmise that other than retirement funds, the next big factor to a happy retirement is choosing the right locale.
If you have to time to respond to my question, ...what retirement expectations did you have that turned out to be "not reality"...just curious.

I don't miss working a bit, yes some of my fellow employees are missed but all is well. I paid off the house, cars and all credit cards before retiring and we are doing just fine, I recommend it highly. See you by the pool!

Retirement location, yes, exactly. what I'm working very hard to figure out right now. thought I had a general location figured out years ago, more or less, and may still end up somewhere in that locale, but now that I'm working on additional aspects of post-retirement activity, whether that general location will fit the bill has yet to be determined. Open to new venues at this point, still geographically defined, just a bigger geography to be fully explored in context of new additional criteria.

Hi MC. First, retirement is heaven. One of the best decisions "WE" ever made. You are correct about the financial part. You want to have adequate income to support your lifestyle.

With respect to the "Perfect location" issue....my wife and I have always used Washington State as that place we went to for the love of nature, the beautiful outdoors, friends and family connections. We would generally make a point to return to the fold about once each 3-5 years to "reconnect". Reconnecting for a day or two is different than reconnecting in real time day to day. So Nostalgia is a tricky thing. You remember stuff about when you were youn, your friends, the things you did, the fun you had, the adventures, etc. and have a tendency to see things through rose colored glasses. For example, while our friends are still dear to us and great people....they have moved in different directions in their lives and our relationships just aren't what they were when we were younger. Nothing bad in all that. Life moves on and we do to...but those changes make things not as right as you might like them to be. Simple I know, but expectations have a powerful impact on all of us.

Best of luck to you in your planning.

Indeed, I reconnect now and then with ancient friends, recognizing that indeed long years have passed, we still find common interests that still allow connections and good conversation during short visits, but indeed there are changes that create vacancies in the conversations now. no major expectations that way, even if end up in relative vicinity. any relocation will require building new circles, not relying on old overlapping histories, a starting point, not the be all.
