Exclusive: White House told federal health agency to classify coronavirus deliberations - sources

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House has ordered federal health officials to treat top-level coronavirus meetings as classified, an unusual step that has restricted information and hampered the U.S. government’s response to the contagion, according to four Trump administration officials.

The officials said that dozens of classified discussions about such topics as the scope of infections, quarantines and travel restrictions have been held since mid-January in a high-security meeting room at the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), a key player in the fight against the coronavirus.

Staffers without security clearances, including government experts, were excluded from the interagency meetings, which included video conference calls, the sources said.

“We had some very critical people who did not have security clearances who could not go,” one official said. “These should not be classified meetings. It was unnecessary.”
The sources said the National Security Council (NSC), which advises the president on security issues, ordered the classification.“This came directly from the White House,” one official said.

On Tuesday morning, the AFGE council that represents the 46,000 officers asked the agency to provide the N95 respirator masks that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention previously said are most effective at protecting against coronavirus infection. TSA leadership denied the request, however, and late that evening announced three of its screeners in San Jose, California, had tested positive for COVID-19. Now, a couple dozen employees deemed to have had contact with those workers are home on self-quarantine. Multiple medical screeners at Los Angeles International Airport are also now facing quarantines after potential exposure to the virus.

Precisely. Not to mention, the move to classify also prevents, temporarily, the evidence getting out that the handling of this crisis was severely bungled. Just a week or two ago Larry Kudlow famously said, 'we have the virus contained.' Right up there with W's 'you're doing a hell of a job Brownie'.

Italy numbers were pretty bad today. They were already bad, at 368, 349, and 345 deaths the past 3 days... but just reported 475 deaths in the past day. 4207 new cases, which previous peak was 3590. For reference, China peaked at about 150 deaths per day. Italy will pass China in total deaths tomorrow, with only half the total cases. Their Case fatality rate started off pretty typical, around 3.5%, but has been steadily rising. Now is at 8.3% (deaths / # cases). I don't really want to speculate... but I imagine the increase is at least partly due to their health care system being overrun.
