North Korean Christmas gift? Just looked at the numbers (https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/) and OMG...At the close of today's count (~1030 EST) there were 9,371 total cases in the USA where 2,960 were new. Increase of 46% in a 24 hour period while clenching the lead over South Korea and France. While this is ongoing, ignorant youth who don't give a crap look forward to partying it up in FL over Spring break. God help us.

Confirmed. Italy passed China today in total deaths. with almost half the cases (41k vs 81k)... Hopefully they peak real soon.

Next up is we could hit 500k cases world wide in the next week or 2.

For reference, China peaked at about 150 deaths per day. Italy will pass China in total deaths tomorrow, with only half the total cases. Their Case fatality rate started off pretty typical, around 3.5%, but has been steadily rising. Now is at 8.3% (deaths / # cases). I don't really want to speculate... but I imagine the increase is at least partly due to their health care system being overrun.

The entire country of Italy has been under quarantine.

Confirmed new cases are going to skyrocket over the next week or so as we are finally getting a decent # of test kits out and used. I think we had a total of 59,000 tested as of yesterday and a million kits just hit the streets. So yea, we might see cases double in a day or two as it takes time to get results back.

    Default 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)

On yesterday’s Trump press briefing, the CDC rep mentioned that there were thousands of test swabs backlogged awaiting processing.

Seems the first machines could only process like 12 test samples a day. New machines started being deployed Monday this week that could process ten times as many, and are being shipped and set up - the result will be about a ten fold increase in the numbers of tests processed in the next few days, as machines are set up and certified, and begin testing backlogs of samples, AND as new swabs are distributed and local labs are able to do the tests, many many more tests will be able to be done.

In short - expect numbers to get MUCH higher, not necessarily just because more people are getting sick (they are) , but because much more testing is being done.

    Default 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)

    I am NOT happy.

Have you heard about this? In February, a couple of weeks before the stock market stared going down, North Carolina Senator Richard Burr had a group fundraiser meeting, with donors of a group who paid between $500 and $10,000 - called The Tarheel Club.

This morning, NPR played a story about how Sen. Burr told the Tarheel Club On FEBRUARY 27 that the Coronia Virus was going to take a very significant bite out of the whole world’s economy, and was going to be very, very bad.

    (NPR story here: https://www.npr.org/2020/03/19/81819...ts-on-covid-19 )

Tonight, it turns out THAT SAME DAY, Sen. Burr SOLD $1.5 million dollars worth of stock, in 26 small trades, liquidating everything.

Sen. Burr sits on the Senate National Intelligence committee, and would have been in a position to be briefed daily on the Governments assessments and plans to deal with...the Covid-19 virus.

    From Propublica.org tonight:

Sen Burr Dumped Up to $1.6 Million of Stock After Reassuring Public About Coronavirus Preparedness

GOP Senator Dumped Stock Before Coronavirus Crisis
    March 19, 2020 at 5:19 pm EDT
    By Taegan Goddard

ProPublica: “Soon after he offered public assurances that the government was ready to battle the coronavirus, the powerful chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Richard Burr, sold off a significant percentage of his stocks, unloading between $582,029 and $1.56 million of his holdings on Feb. 13 in 29 separate transactions.”

    More:

“As the head of the intelligence committee, Burr, a North Carolina Republican, has access to the government’s most highly classified information about threats to America’s security. His committee was receiving daily coronavirus briefings around this time, according to a Reuters story.”

“A week after Burr’s sales, the stock market began a sharp decline and has lost about 30% since.”

“On Thursday, Burr came under fire after NPR obtained a secret recording from Feb. 27, in which the lawmaker gave a VIP group at an exclusive social club a much more dire preview of the economic impact of the coronavirus than what he had told the public.”

I can't even think of words to describe my emotions right now. Throughout life, I've always followed the Scout motto (i.e., Be Prepared) and it would have saved so many lives if the public were informed earlier. I am going to watch "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" tonight but know that none of our representatives regardless of party would give a crap about actually representing the interests of people from their state.

    P.S. Wash your hands.

And use protective gloves when you touch gas pump handles. The virus can linger for DAYS on cold steel surfaces.

  23. Default Science: 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)

Josie Golding, PhD, epidemics lead at UK-based Wellcome Trust, said the findings by Andersen and his colleagues are "crucially important to bring an evidence-based view to the rumors that have been circulating about the origins of the virus (SARS-CoV-2) causing COVID-19."

"They conclude that the virus is the product of natural evolution," Goulding adds, "ending any speculation about deliberate genetic engineering."
