TSP Talk Weekly Wrap Up

by TommyIV on 11-16-2019 at 03:33 PM
A mostly lackluster week ends with a rally on the final trading day to push the three major large cap indices into record highs. Earnings were winding down this week and a shortage of market driving news kept the action this week in a flat tight range jumping between gains and losses. It seemed the quiet action was a sign buyers were running out of gas (cash worth putting to work), but President Trump's economic advisor Lawrence Kudlow commented on progress toward a trade deal and the Federal Reserve

A blanket of optimisms about trade progress drove money out the safer havens like bonds and into stocks this week. Remarks of progress from the U.S. Commerce Secretary over the weekend pushed stock prices to new highs to start the week. Friday's record closing price was the third (Monday and Wednesday) record close of the week for the S&P 500. This was the fourth straight week of gains for the index. Investors deciphered through an array of news and data to justify trading stocks at record prices. The lineup in review included more earnings reports, the Federal Reserve's third consecutive rate cut, consumer and manufacturing

Stocks tacked on a third week of gains fueled by earnings and optimism about progress in the trade negotiations. All the TSP stock funds were up more than 1% for the week and the S&P 500 traded around record highs. The question is whether investors are finally getting over economic worries or has money been moving into a wall of worry. More earnings will be coming in next week and the FOMC meeting is in the middle of the week.

So far good earnings have been celebrated and poor earnings,

Stock indices got an early boost thanks to solid earnings reports from a few banks Tuesday. Prices oscillated following the Tuesday boost even with the majority of the earnings released beating expectations. Reports of retail sales slightly slipping in September may have countered the optimism brought by earnings; yet the report could not wipe out the week's gains given the positive earnings from banks laid a foundation for investors that the consumer is still strong. Data suggests consumer strength
