I think I'm seeing a trend here...up on first trading day of the month, then slight pullback through mid-month..then up again thru the end of the month with a high on the first trading day of the following month...

I've played it this way in I fund since March with good gains

Gang, just a quick check-in to say that I'm gritting my teeth and staying the course. I'm trying to pay attention to trends rather than using my gut (which has been too much of a chicklett in this intermediate uptrend). I'm using a 5 day-15 day EMA, and so far it hasn't crossed yet so I'm still in.

I'm still here and still reading but haven't had the time or energy to post much. I'd better get back to work now.

    Y'all take care,
    Lady

5-15 day EMA is a short-term indicator but it seems like it has been a good one for the last 6 months.

Three of my favorite bloggers have posts I want to share with you all.

First up is a snippet from Brett Steenbarger's 8/23/09 Trader Feed:

"...we have seen neutral or bullish trend readings across the eight S&P 500 sectors since the early July lows. Indeed, the most recent week's data (orange bars above) show an improvement in trend to the upside. That is not what we typically see in markets that are topping out. Thus far, stocks have shown strength and ... an impressive ability to bounce back from short-term weakness. That suggests that money on the sidelines has been aggressive in using weakness to find good long side entries....."

Next is from the 8/21/09 post from Carl Swenlin, always one of my favorites (you may remember that Bullitt mentioned him in a recent blog):

"...I have often said that ascending wedge formations are extremely reliable in that they usually break in the expected direction -- down. But we have both a long-term (months to years) buy signal and a medium-term buy signal, and prices are still behaving very well. Under those conditions we have to expect positive outcomes. Of course we have to be concerned by the fact that the market is short- and medium-term overbought, a condition that will provide the "wall of worry" to help move prices higher.
We are in the 6-month period of negative seasonality with the last, and worst, two months dead ahead. Perhaps that will be able to break the market's winning streak. Perhaps not. I find it is always good to be aware of these things, but let prices lead the way.
Bottom Line: Models and price action have us bullish medium- and long-term. And the market's recent failure to mount a credible correction has set the stage for another leg up.

And last, the Market Rewind chart for the week that always gives such a great picture of the overall market:

Hope you enjoy the information as much as I did!

I keep reading financial commentary that talks about the S&P going to 1050 and then down. I think I understand the technical reasons for that, but in this manipulated market I'm not sure that technical analysis is much help anymore. Still, the closer we get to 1050 the more I seem to pay attention to the ticker.

    I'm such a chicklett!

I think that is too much our MB thinking seeping in... and it's very hard NOT to get caught up in that.

You have to weigh things out - regardless of the Herd and there is a huge difference between being a 'chicklett' and being 'practical'

If things like what you mentioned are not 'challenging your thoughts' then something is fundamentally wrong.

Show-me was just telling us that his family has expanded by two in these hard times. We're looking at the possibility of our family expanding by five. My daughter's husband has lost his job, they have one more month of savings, but if he hasn't found something by then they're all moving in with us. We have a very nice home but it's small. We bought it for two people to live in, not seven. But family is family.

    Times are getting interesting.

Courage, Lady, courage Show-Me. Many others will be doing the same, you're showing the way. My mom told me the other day that my brother (retired military, current diesel jock with 3 dependents, no debt other than 30-yr fixed mort., has recently told her he's just barely making ends meet right now). During the GD, my grandparents moved in with their parents on the farm, father went to city to find work, left wife and kids with the grands. It's deja vu all over again in front of us.
