Kind of like our <1% moves?

There was a short period of time (about 2 weeks) where a bunch of us were moving a fair amount of money in and out of the "I" fund. It was soon after that when the hammer came down and the threats started coming from the FRTIB to cease and desist. Then our IFT's went from daily to twice a month. The excuse was transfer fees were too high. The rumor at the time was the accounting firm managing our accounts barely had enough money to cover the transfers back and forth and complained to the FRTIB. Was the company Blackrock, or something like that? Some of the old timers and can pitch in. I could be wrong but that's how I remember it. Of course that's not saying much.

Yes, that's what they told us. The FRTIB claimed the low operating costs of the funds were being undermined by the frequent moves so they limited it to two a month. Seems unnecessary now. I feel it's the government's way of telling you how to manage your own money. They also produce propaganda trying to convince you to leave your money in the TSP when you retire. What they don't tell you is they use the G fund money to show a more "balanced" balance sheet. There are also proposals out there to cut the return of the G Fund relative to what it actually earns in order to balance the budget. Charge us a fee to do more than two moves. I guarantee people will be glad to pay it.

THIS was my point. Who cares how many individuals want to move their money from one place to another, all of the L funds have to rebalance every day even if no one makes an IFT at all so it is totally dependent on their mix at the end of the day. And now that they have twice as many L funds...

Great conversation everyone. It is nice to see we can still hold an intelligent conversation without the (P) word rearing its ugly head.

Rangerray I hope this cleared some things up for you.

It did shed some light on many aspects, but still, I wonder how much of the process of moving our money between funds actually involves real people, and thereby, an administrative cost in time or money. I can't believe there's a team of people out there that personally have to get involved to a large degree every time I move my shares. In this day and age of computers, I'd think machines are doing most of the grunt work. It's not like I'm asking the TSP to do analysis for me.

Then again, I know very little about what goes on after I initiate a move at the TSP website. I know, right now, I can move my shares around at e-Trade and it's pretty much immediate on my end. My trades there would just about have to be handled by a bunch of computers talking to each other because it happens so dang fast.

Love that 60 day total for the "S" fund. Sure pulled me out of the hole I was in.
