Default Hello, All. Let the education begin

I created my Account Talk page already, so i will just share my introduction from that post:

Hello, everyone. My name is Brandon and this will be my Account Talk page. I'm active duty USN, and as my username suggests, I am an aircrewman and Chief Petty Officer, currently stationed in rainy Whidbey Island, Washington with my wife and two children. I have been active duty for 12 years and have been faithfully putting away at least 10% of my pay since boot camp. For the most part, I have stuck to the L-Funds and made my moves based upon news reports. After a very good 2013 and realizing that my current TSP balance represented more money than I earn in an entire year, I figured it was time that I start to learn more about the market. So a few weeks ago I bought a few basic books on investing and began learning more.

I started with Ben Graham's book, The Intelligent Investor, and despite being more than 50 years old, found it to be a fascinating resource that I continue to reach for. I'm slowly learning to read charts and do my own primitive analysis, with the intent of investing beyond the TSP this year.

I am more than open to any feedback or suggestions of ways to further my knowledge. I've been silently stalking this message board for several months, so I figured it was time to introduce myself. I look forward to sharing my investing journey with all of you.

Welcome aboard. Its a good time to start tracking since many believe the bull market is about to go out to pasture. I'd just keep in mind that everyone can be right and wrong. Just because they are right today doesn't mean they won't be wrong tomorrow.

This is the main reason that I am hoping to diversify. If I am learning anything, it is that profits will continue to exist, even when broad sentiments like "bull" or "bear" exist. The (very) hard part is to find value in the marketplace, regardless of sentiment.

You might consider a subscription to Barron's or you can buy it on a weekly basis - you won't enter information overload. The Wall Street Journal arrives 6 days a week and that is my primary source of information.

I receive the Wall Street Journal weekly and have been watching out for a deal on Barron's. Reading on the internet, they frequently have subscription offers that cost next to nothing. I'm a bit of a tightwad!

    Welcome AircrewChief!

Thanks for joining us. The Intelligent Investor was a good one. Although I was dabbling in stocks and options for years before, it was the book "How to Make Money in Stocks" by William O'Neill that got me. That's more of a mix of a fundy and tech approach. I've since taken more to the technical analysis side. Funny how something so simple like a book can change our lives.

    Best of luck!

That one is already sitting on the shelf! I'm taking some leave next week and will be giving it a read.

Since Tom mentioned about trading OPTIONS and I traded only options on all my accounts (regular, IRA, Roth IRA). I started out trading options with only $2K an aiming for $500 return per week ($500 * 52 wks = $26,000 YR)and so far so good. I place up to 5 trades per weeks and my average is $500 per trades. I learned from various websites, video and books until I came across this (from Phil) two years ago and used only the free info (I visited only three websites so far on the list below), but anyone want to learn trading options should check out them.
