    Government nutrition nannies get it wrong

    Progressives tend to believe that government knows best. The unfolding fiasco over government nutrition misinformation should give them pause.
    For years now the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been recommending that "everyone age 2 and up should consume less than 2,300 milligrams (mg) of sodium each day. Some groups of people should further limit sodium intake to 1,500 mg per day, including adults age 51 or older, all African Americans, and anyone with high blood pressure, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease." Recent studies now suggest that this advice is killing more people than it's saving.
    For example, New England Journal of Medicine published a study in August 2014 reported that that people who consume less 1,500 milligrams of sodium (about 3/4ths of a teaspoon of salt) are more likely to die than people who eat between 3,000 to 6,000 milligrams of sodium per day (1.5 and 3 teaspoons of salt).
    Red meat has long been a government dietary no-no associated with higher risk of cardiovascular disease and colon cancer. Two recent studies find these claims to be overblown. A 2013 European study that followed nearly 450,000 people since the early 1990s found no significant increase in mortality among consumers of red meats, but higher risk of mortality for those who eat processed meats. A 2013 American study that followed 18,000 participants since the mid-1980s reported, "Meat consumption was not associated with mortality."[more]

    No different then all the studies on how much coffee you can/can't drink or how red wine is good for you or not. It just depends on which report is the newest fad. With all the additives in our food if the cancer doesn't get you then we should be well preserved.

    The outer wall of every cell in your body is made out of fat, healthy fats are necessary in the diet. It's when your calorie count exceeds what you need, is when people get fat. Cutting fat out of the diet is depriving your body of a necessary building block.

    The problem isn't fat in foods, it's overindulgence, and processed foods with no nutritional value that are also calorie dense. Isn't it odd how in all the 'western' cultures, americans have the lowest fat diet, but have the biggest problem with obesity? Fat isn't actually what's making people fat.

    Really just try to cut out the fake food (processed / canned crap) and stick to fresh produce and you'll be healthy. Also don't be scared away by real foods that are supposedly 'high in fat' (nuts, avocados, etc), and whole milk is healthier for you than skim milk. Rule of thumb the less processed the food is the better it is for you, eat real food grown out of the earth, not fake stuff made in a laboratory.

    I have lost all confidence in government regulation of what the people should eat, but I never believed it in the first place, false science has lied to us in the past and still is, your children are eating lunches in schools that are based on politics and you think it's ok! Mrs. Obama knows best for our children.
