Funny what CNBC puts front and center on their page. Guess you know which what they want the market to go today. Further down on their page there is this which came out after Mnuchin did his stuff.

China wants a ‘balanced’ trade deal at summit, but the US isn’t interested

China is hoping that this week’s G-20 negotiations will result in a balanced trade deal, but the U.S. says that won’t happen, according to CNBC’s Kayla Tausche.

The reason the U.S. is resisting a balanced deal is because of past transgressions by China.

Does anyone know if Saturday's meeting between Trump and Xi is Saturday in Japan, or Saturday U.S. time? I'm wondering how early we'll hear something out of the meeting.

    Thanks!

Trump says he agreed with Xi to hold off on new tariffs and to let Huawei buy US products

Trump and Xi held their highly anticipated bilateral meeting at the G-20 summit in Japan.

The two leaders agreed to hold off on new tariffs and to proceed with trade negotiations after a series of escalations to their nations’ tariff battle threatened to disrupt the global economy.

Trump suggested he will be reversing his government’s decision to ban American companies from selling products to Chinese tech giant Huawei.

White House trade advisor Peter Navarro: ‘Complicated’ US-China talks ‘will take time’

U.S.-China trade talks may have restarted, but a potential deal is still a ways off, White House trade advisor Peter Navarro tells CNBC.

“We had a deal that was over 150 pages long with seven different chapters” at the time the negotiations flamed out, Navarro says on CNBC’s “Squawk on the Street,” which is “the basis now for moving further forward.”

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin had said last week that the U.S. had been “90% of the way” on China. But Navarro cautions that “this will take time, and we want to get it right.”

China says there will be no trade deal unless existing tariffs are stripped

“If the two sides are to reach a deal, all imposed tariffs must be removed,” Ministry of Commerce spokesman Gao Feng says on Thursday. “China’s attitude on that is clear and consistent.”

The two countries reach a truce in their year-long trade war last week at the G-20 summit in Japan.

However, Trump says after the G-20 meeting that the 25% tariffs currently imposed on $250 billion in Chinese goods will not be reduced.

Signs point to the trade war dragging on as China strikes hard-line tone

China suddenly added a new member to its negotiating team — the country’s commerce minister Zhong Shan, who is seen as a hardliner by many officials in Washington.

"The U.S. side has provoked economic and trade frictions against us and violated the principles of the WTO. It is typical of unilateralism and protectionism...We have to uphold our warrior spirit in firmly defending national and people’s interests in defending the multilateral trading system,” Zhong told the People’s Daily, the official newspaper for the Communist Party in China.

“Trade progress has been in reverse,” says Donald Straszheim, head of Evercore ISI’s China research team.

No surprise. China long ago stated their position.
Play the player, not the cards. Trump is playing the cards.

The cards say China will be hurt more by a trade war than the US will be.

But someone playing the player realizes:

    • China is not afraid of US military might.
    • China's leaders are proud, like Trump; but their pride is rooted in a different substrate than Trump's. IOW, they won't be kissing Trump's ring.
    • China's leaders don't have to worry about being reelected.
    • China's leaders will always live lavishly, regardless of their country's economic footing/outlook.
    • And I guess that: China's growth rate may be slowed by an ongoing trade war, but it will nevertheless, continue to grow.

Mnuchin: Phone call on trade with China set for Thursday, ‘complicated issues’ remain

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says if the call goes well, he would expect in-person meetings to take place.

Mnuchin tells CNBC that Huawei was not a sticking point on the negotiations, but “there are just a lot of complicated issues.”

The world’s largest economies have been engaged in a trade war for more than a year, keeping a cloud of uncertainty over financial markets and the global economic outlook.

US-China trade talks resume in Shanghai with tempered expectations

The two-day meeting is set to take place in Shanghai on Tuesday after President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping reached a ceasefire last month.

“I don’t think personally China would sign a deal if I had a 2% chance of losing the election,” Trump says.

Meanwhile, China has restarted buying U.S. agricultural products. There have been millions of tons of U.S. soybean shipments to China Chinese state media Xinhua reported on Sunday.
