TSP Talk Blog

This and that about the market, the TSP, maybe some politics, and life.

  1. TSP Talk: Follow-through

Stocks followed through yesterday on last week's positive reversal. The Dow gained 410-points and the S&P 500 has now added 105-points in the last two trading days. The action kind of smells like a bottom for this pullback, but there is a little more work to be done to get past resistance. And once we get past the first few days of October, the election year seasonality picture gets more murky.

  2. TSP Talk: Can bulls break 4-week losing streak?

Stocks rallied back strongly on Friday to help alleviate what had been developing as another miserable week for stocks. The big gains (Dow +359) also helped repair some technical damage that had been done to the charts and created a positive reversal formation on the weekly chart. That's the good news. The bad news is, there are still some potential downside targets that may need to get hit before this correction is over.

  3. TSP Talk: Choppy day below resistance

Stocks posted modest gains yesterday in the big three indices as the Dow gained 52-points on a very choppy trading day on Wall Street. We saw some overhead resistance hold, but there was a clear bid for some stocks as we traded near those lows of the day. The Russell 2000 (small caps) was flat on the day but the broader Dow Completion Index (our S-fund) was down on the day.

  4. TSP Talk: 50-day EMA holds as resistance

Volatility is back and September's reputation remains intact as the bears took control again after a day and a half of rebounding. The Dow lost 525-points, or 1.9% while the Nasdaq and small caps lagged with losses near 3%. After a positive open, the S&P 500 hit the 50-day EMA and reversed back down, and that may be a troublesome development with yesterday being the 4th straight day that the index closed below the 50-day EMA.

  5. TSP Talk: Dead cat bounce or is the low in?

Stocks bounced back on Tuesday after the positive reversal day on Monday, so the action was typical, but the question of course is whether this cements in a low for this recent pullback, or if the market is just rebounding to fill in some open gaps on the chart, and / or if new overhead resistance will keep the downtrend alive. The Dow ended the day up 140-points and there was green almost across the board, and that ended a 4-day losing streak for the S&P 500.
