TSP Talk Blog

This and that about the market, the TSP, maybe some politics, and life.

  1. TSP Talk: Flip flopping

Another big morning rally was reversed on Thursday. This one was a gap up open that eventually failed. Stocks were down again as the "sell the rallies" mentality has taken over. There are some signs that the market is overdone on the downside, but that could just mean a multi day rally is well overdue, but that could be sold as well. We're looking for one that should be more meaningful than these fleeting intraday rallies that repeatedly fail. The Dow lost just 7-points but the broader ...
  2. TSP Talk: Pre-Fed rally fails big time

Stocks closed mostly flat yesterday. There I go again - sarcasm! It doesn't work real well in print, does it? Yes, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq were flat on the day but the action was anything but flat. The Fed released their policy statement and initially the big morning rally in stocks was extended to huge levels. The S&P was up nearly 100 points just after 2 PM ET, but that turned into a big loss and finally flat by the close. The Press Conference afterward may have left more questions ...
  3. TSP Talk: Indecisiveness before the FOMC meeting

Another roller coaster ride for stocks on Tuesday as the market braces for today's policy statement from the Fed. After another bloodbath morning got bought and eventually moved into positive territory for a brief moment, stocks rolled over again closing somewhere in the middle of that high / low range. The Dow was down more than 800 in early trading and up over 200 at the highs, and it closed down a modest 68-points. Bonds were down and the dollar was up slightly.

  4. TSP Talk: Reversal!

Stocks were up modestly on a quiet Monday on Wall Street. Yeah, right. What a day! The Dow traded in a 1300 point range and closed with a 99-point gain on very high volume. Most of the other 1200 points were on the downside as we had a powerful positive reversal day. Small caps, which had been beaten up the most, recovered the most and tacked on a big gain. The I-fund lagged as we might expect with the dollar down and the U.S. indices rallying late. Bonds were down.

  5. TSP Talk: Relief coming, or a crash?

Once again we saw an attempted rally turn south on Friday as the indices continue to get crushed, and the start to 2022 is officially ugly! The S&P 500 has given up 7.7% so far this year, which I guess is only a modest portion of 2021's 29% gain. Small caps are another story as they have now given back all of 2021's gains. The Dow lost another 450-points on Friday. Bonds rallied as investors moved toward safety.
