TSP Talk Blog

This and that about the market, the TSP, maybe some politics, and life.

  1. TSP Talk: Small caps bounce back, but it remains rotational as large caps lag

It was a very sluggish day for stocks on Tuesday, but as we have seen often in recent weeks, one or two indices buck the trend and outperform. Yesterday was the small caps turn to take the ball and run. On a day that saw the Dow fall 104-points, and the Nasdaq and S&P close also close with modest losses, the small caps bounced back from their awful day on Monday. The dollar was up, as were yields, and the Transports made new highs.

  2. TSP Talk: A very mixed picture as yields have their impact again

It was a day of new all time highs for the Dow, and the S&P was close if not for a late tick lower, but for the rest of the market... not so good. Small caps were pounded again, and the Nasdaq saw some moderate losses. Bonds were down as yields rallied. There's a lot going on, but what's real, what's hype, and what's it all mean?

  3. TSP Talk: Stocks fly higher into Friday's close

It was a crazy ending to a wild week for stocks on Friday, culminating with a final 15 minute rally the likes of which I don't recall ever seeing before. Other than the Nasdaq, the indices were mostly green all day, with decent gains at the intraday highs during the trading day. A curious late spike higher took the gains to another level and the Dow ended the day up 453-points, and all three TSP stock funds gained over 1.5% for the day.

  4. TSP Talk: Nice reversal day, but resistance still a possible issue

Stocks rallied back from another early dismal sell off to close with solid gains and near the highs of the day on Thursday. The Dow closed with a gain of about 200-points, coming back from an early 300-point decline. Yields were stable but bonds hit some resistance. The dollar was up, but it is facing facing resistance. The index charts bounced off key support and are testing some resistance.

  5. TSP Talk: Early gains fail as rebalancing continues

Stocks once again fell apart in the afternoon trading session, after a very strong morning. The Dow only lost 3-points but it gave up a 360-point earlier gain, and the Russell 2000 small caps were up 1.6% at their highs, only to close down 2.6% so someone opened up the selling spigots. The Nasdaq was on a risk off day as well. Yields fell and growth is supposed to bounce back in that case, right? That's what we've seen lately, anyway.
