TSP Talk Blog

This and that about the market, the TSP, maybe some politics, and life.

  1. TSP Talk: A strong rebound gets heavy by the close

Stocks rebounded on Thursday after Wednesday's surprise sell off. Point-wise, it was a good day but the rebound wasn't all that impressive as the indices closed well off their earlier highs. The Dow ended the day with a gain of 300-points or 1%. The S&P 500 had a similar gain and the Nasdaq lost a lot of steam in the final couple of hours and gained just 0.50% after closing about 200-points of its high of the day. So much for opportunities to try to buy a dip because these moves are lasting minutes, not days or weeks, and if you saw the sell-off and tried to act before our IFT deadline, by the close ...
  5. TSP Talk: Big earnings week coming up

Stocks bounced back last week, after the prior week's selling, but on Friday we saw another weirdly mixed day with a 179-point loss in the Dow, a modest loss in the S&P 500, yet the Nasdaq, and particularly the small caps, were up. The Russell 2000 small caps index was actually up 1.3%, so once again investors may be selling in one area, but they're buying elsewhere.
