    The bulls came to life this week taking some control after a bear dominated October. Three positive trading days in a row pushed large caps stocks up more than 2% and small caps up more than 4%. Stocks bounced back from a poor start Monday and the momentum carried through to Thursday and even into Friday morning. Earnings reports and an apparent ease in trade tensions between China and the U.S. kept buyers interested.

    The sell off in stocks resumed this week as the bears have had complete control of stocks this October. The pattern this week was two series of a sharp sell-offs followed by a rally the next day. In both cases the sell-off was more dominant than the buying that trailed. The net result was a loss of nearly 4% across major stock indices.

    Stocks continued their volatile action throughout the week as indices are recovering from the recent sell-off. After a slow start Monday, stocks built some of their best gains in months mid-week. Those gains were all erased Thursday and by the close on Friday we were back where we started for the week in the S&P 500. Small caps underperformed large caps as the early gains in the S-fund turned into losses.

    Welcome to October. Most were given their second reality check this year of the risk in stock investing. It was a case of the butterfly effect where the true beginning is nearly impossible to pinpoint but left investors and analysts pointing their finger at high bond yields sparking the technical unwinding of stocks. We saw small caps begin to unwind last week and finally large caps were unable to hang on. The sell-off started Wednesday and continued Thursday.
