Investors faced the Federal Open Markets Committee this week, and it was not pretty. The FOMC was expected to keep the Fed Fund rate steady in this meeting, but it also put out its latest rate projections for future rates. The FOMC did hold rates steady but surprised the market with projections to keep rates higher for longer and possibly another rate hike in one of the two meeting left in 2023.

The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report came out on Wednesday, a week ahead of the next Federal Open Markets Committee (FOMC) meeting. This is the last major report card on inflation the Federal Reserve gets before making their next monetary policy decision. The CPI report showed an acceleration in inflation from the previous month's report. The report was up 0.6% from the previous month. A lot of that increase came from an increase in energy price. The long weekend ended the bull's momentum. The previous week's best performer turned to this week's worst. The S-fund was down all four days of the shortened week and accumulated a loss of 2.5% for the week. There was little relief from losses among the TSP stock funds. Only the C-fund had a day of gains for the week and it was a modest 0.15% gain on Friday. The S and I-funds recorded a loss everyday of the four day week.

The main fear across the stock market is inflation ...

The bulls amplified their presence in the final week of August. All four TSP funds outside of the G-fund suffered losses for August, but those who bought into the selling earlier in the month were rewarded with a rally this week.

The greatest winners this week were those holding the S-fund. The small cap TSP fund has produced a six-day winning streak and has gained 4.75% over those six days and a 4.24% gain for this week alone.
