Stocks were up for the week after some mixed action following early gains Monday. The stock indices failed to produce momentum in any direction giving us a second consecutive week of sideways movement after the strong move by the bulls in early May. The ups and downs were driven by a multitude of factors this week including dovish remarks by the Fed, an ease off the possibility of a trade war with China, North Korea, and sliding U.S. Treasury bond yields. Stocks were mixed this week with small caps (S-fund) outperforming with modest gains while large caps (C-fund) pulled back slightly for the week. There was no obvious catalyst to provoke traders this week so the action was more sideways and old worries of a rising dollar, rising yields, rising oil, geopolitical issues, and trade war problems made the news to suggest reason behind the mixed moves. Stocks were up this week and produced the greatest weekly gains in the last couple months. Oil prices were up and stocks followed which is not always the case but other sectors followed the rise in energy stocks. Data published this week also suggest inflation has remained at a rate preferred by investors who believe it may slow down the rate of rates raised by the Fed. This lifted some worries from investors and gave them the confidence to put more cash into stocks.

Stocks made a full circle last week starting with some nice early gains to open on Monday morning but those highs on Monday ended up being the highs for the week. By early Thursday we were hitting the lows for the week but some buying late Thursday turned into a big post jobs report rally on Friday, and the S&P 500, which was down over 2.5% at one point, closed down just 0.25% for the week.
