  1. A mini tariff tantrum

    The stocks market took a break from its 4-day rally and pulled back a bit on Thursday. The indices opened slightly lower but a mid-afternoon $200 billion China tariff comment from President Trump quickly pushed back the dip buying attempts. The Dow ended the day down a modest 138-points, and the losses were fairly broad, although nothing too serious.

  2. New highs again

    Stocks were making another round of new highs again yesterday as the Nasdaq led with a 1% gain, the S&P was up 0.57%, and small caps added 0.36%. The dollar was down, the I-fund was up, and bonds were slightly lower but basically flat. The Dow gained 61-points, about 42-points off the highs of the day.

  3. Flat

    Tuesday was a snooze-fest as stocks traded in a very tight range, hardly straying from break-even. By the close the Dow had gained 14-points, the S&P added 1, and most of other the major stock indices traded up less than 0.2%, with only the Transportation Index being down - although bonds were down as well.

  4. A trade rally?

    Stocks came jumping out of the starting gate on Monday morning with another gap up opening. The Dow ended the day up 259-points, or +1%, leading the way percentage-wise as the positive trade news helps the global companies more than small caps. Speaking of small caps, the Russell 2000 was up just 0.16%. A good day normally, but well below the large cap indices. The S-fund, which is a mixture of small and mid-sized companies, gained 0.4%.

  5. Was it too early for a pre-holiday reversal last week?

    It was a strong day for stocks on Friday as the Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell was singing a dovish song for the economy at the Fed's annual symposium in Jackson Hole. The Dow gained 133-points, or 0.52% on the day, with the broader indices performing even better.
