This and that about the market, the TSP, maybe some politics, and life.

  1. TSP Talk: The bears step aside for another day

I would define the action on Wednesday as chippy. It gave both the bulls and bears something to chew on, but frustrated both as the deeply negative overnight futures rolled over into Wednesday's opening, but it was quickly bought. The bulls then took over until later in the afternoon where the buying dried up and the bears came back in the picture to pull those gains away and push the indices into the red, although basically flat. The Dow closed down 47-points but it was positive literally 3 ...
  2. TSP Talk: Stocks start the week with a rebound

Stocks have been due for some relief and we saw some of that on Tuesday following 10 down weeks out of the last 11 for the three major indices. The Dow gained 641-points but there was a little selling in the final hour of trading as investors still show signs of being nervous in this "sell the rallies" environment. We saw a big bounce back in the energy sector as it led the way higher despite the price of oil - while up modestly yesterday - remaining near recent lows. Smalls caps and ...
  3. TSP Talk: A mixed and choppy expiration Friday for TSP Funds

Stocks were mixed on Friday, the end of an expiration week that saw a spike in volume, which is typical and not necessarily an indication of a capitulation type of reversal, but it certainly is a cleansing as we enter the the final couple of weeks of the second quarter of this bear market year. The Dow dropped 38-points on Friday while the S&P was up modestly, and the Nasdaq and small caps led with impressive gains as investors favored the more aggressive and beaten down indices. The Dow, ...
  4. TSP Talk: The downside resumed after the brief Fed rally

More crooked number losses on Thursday after Wednesday's modest Fed day rebound. The bears are putting the pedal to the metal in this environment, as they tend to do, but the rubber band has probably gotten over stretched on the down side with this recent decline. The Dow closed almost 200-points off the lows, but still lost 741-points none-the-less. Bonds and gold were up as we start seeing signs of a flight to safety from investors.

  5. TSP Talk: Stocks rally into the Fed, hold onto gains after

They sold the rumor and bought the news. The Fed raised the Fed Funds rate 0.75% and stocks, which were up sharply before the Fed policy statement was released, tacked onto those gains, but it was a wild day and the indices closed well off both their highs and their lows of the day. The Dow gained 304-pioints, but that's just 1%. Of the 4 major indices, only the Nasdaq gained more than 2%, so after almost a week of daily 2% to 5% losses, the gains yesterday were good, but nothing to write home ...
