View Full Version : FREE NFL POOL 2011 (it's easy)

Hi all -

I am starting a "Last Man Standing" NFL pool (the software I am using actually calls it a Survivor pool - same thing).

It's very easy - Here's how it works

You pick one team to win each week (no pointspreads). If they lose, you are eliminated. A win or tie and you move on. The only catch is, you can't use the same team more than once during the year.

You must get your pick in by the weekly deadline - before the first game each Sunday. Early games must be picked before they start. All picks will be hidden until the game has begun (for early games) or the until the first game on Sunday.

If you fail to make a pick, you get the team that is the largest favorite for the week (that you have not used already).

Please try to incorporate your TSP Talk message board username in your Team Name in the pool so we know who you are... But non-TSP Talk members are welcome too.

Good luck to everyone. If you have any questions, please contact me via Private Message (PM) (http://www.tsptalk.com/mb/private.php?do=newpm&u=1) or contact us via email (support AT tsptalk DOT com) or use the "contact us" link in the menu on the left on www.tsptalk.com (http://www.tsptalk.com/).

how much easier could it be? i wonder what the odds are on that? if any of you actually attended statistics class regulary in college please enlighten me.

maybe the new labor agreement changed the numbers around a bit, but the theory is the same.

From my poker playing days: You multiply probabilities so the odds of getting a coin flip correct 16 times in a row is:

.50 x .50 x .50 x .50 x .50 x .50 x .50 x .50 x .50 x .50 x .50 x .50 x .50 x .50 x .50 x .50 = .0000153

1 / .0000153 = 65,359. So you would do that 1 in 65,359 times. Subtract 1 to get odds of:

65,358 to 1.

You should sell that system. :)

By the way, I won a poker tournament in Nevada last weekend. Just say'in. :D

65k ~ 1 ? shoot, i didn't think it was going to be that hard. looks like i got my work cut out for me then, maybe i can cut them odds some with a little due dilegence.

ok, before i make my week 1 pick, someone please help me understand the research? i never was any good at sports, or betting.

patriots at -7.5 means dolphins lose by more than 7 points? do the always list the visitor first and does a negative number mean the home team will win by at least that much?

or

really dude, you think the raiders can stop the broncos from kicking their but by less than that much?

seriously, i'm gonna need a little help here.

Yes, if the Dolphins are within 7.5 points, they win. So, Patriots 20 Dolphins 13 would be a win for the Dolphins. Add 7.5 to 13 = 20.5 and they cover the spread.

wvango
09-07-2011, 10:34 AM
Just remember that for the TSP NFL Pool we are picking straight out winners (no pointspreads). You just use the spread to assit you in picking your one out right winner per week.

To reiterate what has been said - Yes the -7.5 means the Patriots are favored to win the game in your example, but as wvando said, the pointspread is not a factor in this pool. Just pick the winner of the game. The spread is only a guide in this case, as to who is favored to win.

And it looks like the way it displayed in your example, that the the home team is on the right. The team after the "At". :)

ok i think i got it now, number is not the odds win/lose, but how many points you give up/are spotted vs. other team, right?

so patriots -7.5 at dolphins means patriots are favored to win by more than a TD and PAT,

and raiders +3.5 at broncos means broncos are favored to win by more than a FG.

if that's what the numbers mean then i think i got a free coffee mug in my future.

I see the pollsite says I'm still alive, probably because I didn't make my pick yet, although 2/3 already did, so I better get on it.

oh forget it, all the thinking about numbers was making the noggin hurt.

i'm just going with my favorite team ever, because if they don't win then i lose interest in the rest of the season, and if they do win then I never have to decide whether to bet with them or against them later, which could present quite the moral quandry and i try to avoid those.

whew, i'm glad that's over with.

Tom,
Thanks for taking my word. As far as the software, I usually do not pick early in the week but I did last week on Wednesday for both pools. I selected Dallas for the first pool and for the revival I selected Baltimore (sure thing right!) for Monday night. I was concerned that I picked too early but rushed home on Sunday at 12:30 and went into both pools to ensure that my picks were noted. I entered both pools from my tablet and Dallas and Baltimore were double checked as my picks for this past weekend. I logged out of each pool after looking at the pick screen which had my picks highlighted in yellow. I did not select the picks again and backed out of that menu and logged out. I repeated that process on both pools and somehow I ended with with Oakland in both pools sometime after that (no clue when it changed). I am not sure what I did wrong other than not reselecting my picks which were already highlighted. I am pretty sure I have done this same process one or two weeks in the past but I was uneasy with such an early selection on Wednesday so I thought I would perform a check. I think I need to go back in at the top level (before entering the specific pool) and review the status at that screen rather than going into each pool. I will watch it closely this week but based on last night I only have to worry about one pool since my home team (Ravans season ticket holder) failed to get off the bus in Jacksonville.
I appreciate your consideration and to other pool members concerns since I was shocked last night to see my status with a selection of Oakland for both pools when I returned home. My work computer blocks the web site so I was casually surfing last night before the game and when I saw the pool results, I couldn't believe what happened since I thought I went the extra step on Sunday at 12:30 to double check. Good luck to everyone in the pools, it makes Sunday and Monday more interesting even when your favorite team is getting their butts kicked.
Baltimore fan forever, Steve

2nd Place = TSP Talk Travel Mug

3rd Place = TSP Talk Travel Mug

Well, we were down to 5 in this original pool and all 5 got knocked out this weekend. I had not thought of this type of situation but I guess we can do this one of two ways:

1) We can do it like a golf tournament when players tie for 2nd place or lower and the prizes are divided among the tied players. That would be $20 each plus a travel mug for all.

2) Or, we can go to a tie breaker and have the 5 teams keep going.

If you are one of thos 5, what would you prefer to do?

I will also send an email to the remaining teams.

1) We can do it like a golf tournament when players tie for 2nd place or lower and the prizes are divided among the tied players. That would be $20 each plus a travel mug for all.

2) Or, we can go to a tie breaker and have the 5 teams keep going.

I haven't heard from 2 of the remaining 5 but so far we are leaning toward a tie-breaker and keeping it going. If the other 2 don't respond here or to the email I sent, then tomorrow I will see if I can reopen the pool so the 5 tied players can make picks.

OK the tie Breaker is on! Final 5, make your picks. Good luck!

5 still alive in this original pool. That one guy who has taken the default team for the last several weeks is starting to annoy me (since I'm one of the 5). :D

Down to 3 here and yes, my son and I are 2 of the 3. Very fishy, huh? If Green Bay did not hit the last second field goal against the Giants yesterday, it could have been just me and my son - if the Giants were able to win in OT.

Garnet Greer,
Tom (tsptalk),
Tommy

We finally lost Boomiespack, who hadn't made a pick in months.

Also, "Jim" was eliminated, but I will give him a travel mug for coming in 3rd, since I won't count myself as part of the top 3. I'll contact you when it's all over. Oh, and "Jim" is also one of the 5 left in the revival pool (http://www.tsptalk.com/mb/showthread.php?10002-Revival-NFL-Last-Man-Standing-Pool).

Congratulations to my son for being the Last Man Standing!

There goes my tax deduction as I'll probably have to give him cash. :D

Please Private Message (PM) (http://www.tsptalk.com/mb/private.php?do=newpm&u=1) or email (http://www.tsptalk.com/images/email_support.gif)me your shipping info to claim your travel mugs!

Tom - Are you planning on having the Last Man Standing NFL Pool in 2012? I had a blast with it last year.
