Postal workers in Romulus win Mega Millions jackpot

by Steve Pardo / The Detroit News

Romulus — A group of post office employees are expected to collect a check for $46.3 million — less taxes (http://detnews.com/article/20110203/METRO01/102030432/1409/rss36#) — Friday at the state lottery offices in Lansing.

Several employees at the priority mail processing center on Van (http://detnews.com/article/20110203/METRO01/102030432/1409/rss36#) Born road are members of a lottery club and are believed to be the holder of one of two tickets that will split a $93 million jackpot. A second winning ticket was sold in Indiana. The Michigan winners will claim their prize at 2 p.m. Friday, said Andi Brancato, a spokeswoman for the Michigan Lottery Commission.

LANSING – Two of 13 current and retired postal workers at a Romulus mail center today claimed their lottery club’s Mega Millionshttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif (http://www.freep.com/article/20110204/NEWS05/110204041/1001/rss01#) jackpot from Tuesday’s multi-state drawing — $46.5 million.

That’s half of the $93 million jackpot. The other half goes to a ticket purchased in Indiana.
Jose and Charlene Person, both 48, said they began jumping and singing their lottery club’s song — “We’re in the Moneyhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif (http://www.freep.com/article/20110204/NEWS05/110204041/1001/rss01#)” — when they discovered they held a winning ticket while watching a morning television news show Wednesday.

“It was, ‘Yes, yes, yes. Yes! Whoo!’” Charlene Person said.
The numbers were 16, 22, 23, 26, 35 and the gold ball was 31.
She said they “started screaming and hollering” and singing, waking their children who thought they were fighting.
“I was, like, we hit the lottery,” Charlene said. “It was just a dream. It seems like I’ve been dreaming ever since.”

The couple, married for eight years, said none in the lottery club who still works at the Priority Mail Center have said they’ll quit working.
Asked what they’ll do with their portion of the winnings, Jose Person said, “Stimulate the economy.”

In an effort to spread the credit, he added, “I’d like to thank God and President Obama, he’s doing a good job, keep up the good work.”
