View Full Version : Working on Database Performance Issues

Twice each year our credit card processing company requires that we run security scans looking for possible security issues. Each time they require us to upgrade to the latest versions of software like MySQL and PHP.

We had that done the other day and just like every other time, it seems, we have trouble getting things back to exactly the way they were. The message board database seems to take the brunt of the problems since it is kind of a resource hog.

The server techs are tweaking some settings to try to get us back in order. It may take a day or two.

HERE IS A HELPFUL SUGGESTION to avoid some frustration. When writing a post, select and copy the message before hitting submit. This way if the page times out, you can just paste it in a new post instead of losing it all.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Also, the rest of the site should be OK, although occasionally the home page will be down if it is trying to access the MB database.

To get to the AutoTracker or the market commentary, for instance, just type in the URL: http://www.tsptalk.com/tracker/tsp-tracker.php (http://www.tsptalk.com/tracker/tsp-tracker.php), http://www.tsptalk.com/comments.html (http://www.tsptalk.com/comments.html).

Sorry about the continued slowdowns. The server folks seem to believe it is a specific database "query" causing the problem, and it may have to do with our stats links at the top of the page.

We have all gotten used to these convenient links and it would be a shame to lose them permanently, but it could be them that is causing the massive slow down.

I will be putting them up and taking them down during some tests today. Right now (12:11 PM ET) they are down and the message board is doing well.

I will keep working on it.

Tom, this is just an observation so take it for what it's worth. After the Youtube Link update, Poolman's thread loads slower.

I've also seen the link for IT's investment talk 3 times under the new post link. Each time I clicked on it, I was denied access . Again, it's just an observation as I'm not sure I should even be seeing that thread.

I counted 27 youtube video links on his most current page. That's just going to be a little slower, but perhaps the new youtube software does use more resources. If it becomes a problem we can go back to the old way.

Thanks for checking it Tom, I just figured you weren't busy enough and needed more stuff to do. :D

I can't get to my IFT records to record my move this morning. Poor Tom, he's probably tearing his hair out by now. He doesn't deserve these kind of headaches. :worried:
