Burgers go way of booze as US general Stanley McChrystal bans junk food

First he banned booze in his Kabul headquarters. Now the notoriously austere commander of US and Nato forces has a new target in his war on terror: ice cream and fast food.
General Stanley McChrystal, the former commander of Special Forces in Iraq, who runs eight miles a day, eats one meal and sleeps for only four hours a night, has given orders to close the junk food concessions on Nato bases.
No longer will the fighter pilots at Bagram or Kandahar airfields be able to ring Pizza Hut to deliver. Once General McChrystal has his way, the Whoppers will be off the menu: Burger Kings at both locations are to close. Even the newly opened TGI Friday’s on the waterfront in Kandahar is to close its doors once its contract expires.
“This is a war zone, not an amusement park,” wrote Command Sergeant-Major Michael T. Hall in a military blog.

Honestly, What the hell? We are there to stop the people who hate us and our ways and we freakin bring western restaraunts to their country?

The conversation should have gone like this:
First Person: Hey, I think we need a McDonald's here.....
Second Person: Um, no, they don't like western ways.
First Person: Yeah, you're right...let's treat their customs and culture with respect!
Second Person: That way we can leave and not be blamed for influencing any cultural bias.

This will negatively impact morale. Come on General. Every meal may be that soldier's last meal. At least let them eat the food they want! :mad:

Three words: Meals Ready to EAT. That's enough....designed way better than the c-rats and crap of the old day....

The other stuff gets them fat and lazy.....:D

The MRE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MRE) has been reformulated several times since they were introduced. Mainly to improve the flavor, something that is sorely lacking in the indestructible and almost inedible "food." I have tasted several generations of the MRE going back to when it replaced C-Rations in 1980. I was first in Air Force JROTC in high school and then in Army ROTC in college and we ate many an MRE. At first they were fun, a solid bag filled with food and little treats.

But when we were on exercises for a few days they quickly lost their novelty. We would trade them around, trying to see who had the best meal and started calling them Meals, Rarely Edible and other more disparaging names. I was partial to the BBQ on crackers for a few days until my digestive system went on strike. I never received my commission in the Army because I broke my neck just before finishing my training. That accident saved me from having to eat thousands of the damn nasty things over the years and while I regretted not serving my country, I don't regret the absence of MRE's in my life.

Now it is the nutrition that is being addressed. Soldiers are losing weight in the field, some up to 20-40 pounds with one soldier being evacuated because he was suffering from malnutrition and lost 60 pounds. One thing that is immediately obvious is the calorie levels of the newest MRE's. They only have 1200-1300 calories in each meal. I know that when I was working as a wilderness guide and mountain climber we would sometimes eat meals that were 5,000 calories and we still lost weight over the course of several weeks.

To address the situation short term the Combat Feeding Directorate is going to send about 4,000 prototypes of a new meal called FSR, First Strike Ration (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Strike_Ration), to Iraq and Afghanistan. It is designed for limited use and the ration contains about double the calories of an MRE.

The problem with the MRE's isn't just that they don't have enough nutrition or calories. It is that they weigh a lot. Many troops are "field stripping" their MRE's to remove bulk and weight so they can carry more ammunition. But in doing so are also throwing away needed calories.

So maybe the military should start something similar to Jennie Craig or Weight Watchers and sell the MRE's as a weight loss program. Just go on an MRE only diet, plus a mini version of basic training, add in some combat time, and in just a few short weeks you'll be slim 'n trim. We used to use that one to scrape the ice off the windshields. There really wasn't anything else it was good for.

Chicken & Rice became a mainstay for many years. I'd trade just about anything, including the 300 year old pound cake, for Chicken & Rice.

It is typical ARMY mentality. If one group of soldiers has it better than another group, then they take away what's good so that everyone can suffer equally. When you're a General I guess it's easy to forget how much the Middle East sucks when you get to fly home to your wife whenever you feel like it. I've setup the comm in their quarters a few times, yea let me tell you it ain't' rough, no not in the least bit. I see hypocrite written all over this. Now General Tommie Franks was salt of the earth, as for General McCrystal, I have no comment.
