Friday was the deadline to pass the Omnibus bill for 2009 operations- with more money, the government would have ceased operations- no money to pay employees, you know.
They didn't have the votes do do the Omnibus- so they did a quick continuing resolution lasting until March 11th.
==============================================
--H.J.Res.38--
H.J.Res.38
One Hundred Eleventh Congress
of the
United States of America
AT THE FIRST SESSION
Begun and held at the City of Washington on Tuesday,
the sixth day of January, two thousand and nine
Joint Resolution
Making further continuing appropriations for fiscal year 2009, and for other purposes.
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Continuing Appropriations Resolution, 2009 (division A of Public Law 110-329) is amended by striking the date specified in section 106(3) and inserting `March 11, 2009'.
Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Vice President of the United States
===============================
It passed both the House and the Senate on Friday.
I haven't heard, but I presume the President would have signed it.
Anyway- the Omnibus has many good things in it for employees- but it also has a lot of line items of earmarks. The republicans also are trying to do amendments to get Senate Democrats on record as either supporting certain pork line items, or not supporting , for example, a removal of the automatic pay increase clause for Congress.
They expect another dozen or so amendments perhaps on Monday and Tuesday, with a final vote on Tuesday.
IF the Senate changes anything at all, adopts any of the amendments they are talking about now, then the Omnibus will have to go back over to the House for another vote.
Sen. Kennedy is being flown in (from cancer treatment in florida) on Tuesday to try and get the 60th vote. It's that close.
