I viewed a program by The Alliance for American Manufacturing, on PBS last night that opened my eyes to what a great disservice our Government is doing to our Countries Manufacturing Base. We all know folks that were part of our GREAT MIDDLE CLASS that have lost their jobs, homes, retirement and financial security due to the UNFAIR TRADE AGREEMENTS that our legislators refuse to change. All we need is a fair deal and we will recover. I have children that can't find a decent job because there are none, the good jobs left the country, with a GREAT SUCKING SOUND! Minimum wage jobs will not save our economy!!!
This started with NAFTA and has bloomed to be a world wide problem that is feeding all of our economic problems. SOMETHING needs to be done!!!
Here is a link to their site, look around and learn.

Maybe, but the Law of One Price, i.e "In an efficient market all identical goods must have only one price", would suggest not. The Law of One Price includes the price for labor.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_one_price

Considering China's per capita GDP is $5,300, India's per capita GDP is $2,700, and the U.S.'s per capita GDP is $45,000, unless something is done, e.g. tariffs, increasing energy prices, or a continued fall in the value of the dollar, U.S wages will move toward those in China and India. My brother, who works as a pattern maker, in the auto industry has been calling it a "race to the bottom" for about 20 years. Although since he was promoted to management in his shop, he hasn't mentioned it. Incidentally, the pattern making industry is now primarily owned by the Mexicans. So Mexico is out-sourcing to the U.S.

Of course, the Rick Wagoners (GM's CEO) of the world could care less about the plight of the American worker - except as an argument for a $50B government bailout to compensate for their own management incompetance. Apparently, he can't do the "vision thing" and his span of control is probably 8. So why is he worth $15.7M per year? For $15.7M we can hire 78 SES's to run GM into the ground.

As long as Americans keep getting distracted by and voting for "God, gays, and guns", instead of jobs and economic security, they can only blame themselves.

Rant over.----Jim

Helloooo! Freewheeling economics with tax credits for overseas business taxes and no medical costs or payroll taxes (what idiot thought of a tax only for working Americans and their employers???) for overseas employees = U.S. workers screwed. :( We don't have a trade agreement with China or India, but manufacturing and service companies are now indentured to them. So getting something passed now to stop it, good luck, becuase now it will affect business in the U.S. (designed here, manufactured or run you know where...).

AND we have to import coal from China at higher prices because of our strict environmental laws. They don't have the restrictions that we have and are polluting their country and our western states. Just the drift of SMOG from China contributes 1/4 of the pollution in California!
NOT FAIR and EQUAL COMPETITION!!
Now TVA is raising their rates------ENJOY!

Coal? How about those sloppy operators in West Virginia? The laws here don't mean anything. We are getting more than bad air from China, don't get me started on we have less inspectors for violations of safety and sanitation laws than we did before the big spike of imports from certain very loosey goosey manufacturers.....
They have laws, we have laws. as if we can all stop it with posing.

Yes we need better regulation, but the competition is way behind us and this is killing our economy. Check out the links on the right side of this page.

No question, that's why I alway snicker when the Chinese whine about our currency dropping in value and their gasoline subsistities becoming unsustatinable - they went in with their eyes open. Their only mistake is they can't force innovation like they control everything else. They really think Microsoft and Intel are a result of U.S. Government strategy. They do us waaaayyyy too much credit. Oh and they blame us for the falling currency too. :toung:

But seriously, they way we run business here, it encourages short term profit from anywhere but here. Always look at Government policy on business this way. What behavior does it encourage if a business wants long term profit? You're in business to make a profit on your inventions and ideas, not to take over the world or save it, contrary to popular belief. Our business enviroment says, cheap and cheat = profit.

That's not sustainable either for the economy, your consumers can't borrow anymore now, and either you don't hire them or their wages don't keep up with prices (or both). But for one individual company, they will only care about and scream about their own situation.

Yeh- this has been going on for years.

Are people ready to wake up yet?

Are they ready to stop buying at Wal-Mart?

Are they ready to start buying American built cars?

Listen to this-

At the current rate- nothing will be left soon. Everyone in the U.S. will be living on poverty wages. Because no one will buy American. Everyone is running to Chinese products- and nothing will be left in the USA.
