I think the I fund while it looks attractive may be in trouble. The FV makes it even more difficult and the foreign markets are having problems. It would not be a shock to see the I Fund below $20 soon.

Strongly disagree with that comment. Looking for some strong returns from this point on. I see a double digit gain from these levels this year.

My entry point will be as soon as it hits below $20.00. The foreign markets combined with ours is not good for this fund. JMO we shall see soon enough.

Once the European central banks start buying dollars this whole situation will turn around - and it will happen rather quickly. To me the bigger risk currently is being out of the market not in.

Why would they do that?I'm a bit leery of that idea too, there's no reason for the EU to want their currency to keep rising. Anyway, if they buy too much and the dollar rises, China, Japan and the Middle Eastern oil countries will start to sell dollars to minimize their currency losses, and the EU would be stuck with the dollars.

Your thinking is possible and I am thinking the same way.

I was thinking of buying today, but Europe was up.

Russia wants high oil prices. Perhaps they will escalate the war in Georgia. If Europe goes down next week, I may jump in and buy more.

Rustynutt

I'd say that with Georgia provoking it, I'm sure Russia will escalate the situation and provide protection. Seriously doubt Russia will allow genocide of their population. Bet more territorial disputes erupt before the end of this administration. Wonder what kind of a deal Obama is going to have to make to secure a spot as a world leader. At least McCain can just fall back on current policy.

Right now I am 100% S Fund and it hasn't moved that well compared to the C Fund recently. The I Fund looks to be on the verge of a drop because the foreignn markets are doing bad. The strong dollar is good for tht USA but not for Foreign Countries.

So if the US Market has a bad day the I Fund drops. If the foreign Markets have a rea good day but the US Market is down the I Fund drops. To me it appears the I Fund does well if the Foreign have a very good day combined with the US Markets and that may happen one a week. Add in the -FV or +FV and right now after looking at the picture I can move there even at the low price. I really see it below $20 soon within a month.

I'm afraid the bad news of the european and Japanese economic slow downs have already been built into the I fund price. I'm going to hold my 30% position in the I fund because interest rates on a global basis are set to begin falling soon. That will rally the stocks of their respective countries.

As long as rates aren't rising here, the small caps should come out of this slow down / recession better the large cap multi nationals, who will be affected negatively by a strengthening dollar - just as they benefited from the weak dollar.

The question is: Is the rally in the dollar for real, or another smoke screen? The answer to that is the answer to C or S.

I'll toss 2 cents into this discuss.
My understanding was the the weak dollar was good for the US (for past months) in helping helping maintain our export numbers. Now that its strengthening, we might see our export numbers retreat (especially as overseas is inflating ...this weakening their consumer)
Of course, the weak dollar was at same time, the cause for much of our country's problematic commodities bubbles (most hurtful was our oil/gas pices).

Point is, our U.S. exports have been critical, so, we still may see th U.S. dollar pullback some, short-term, -but, I hope this will be only sufficient, that our dollar can continue up again regaining its strength at a stable area.
Then going forward, with time, hoping we see even more continuing gradual improvement, giving us back our strong dollar, as the rest of the world consumers get their currencies under control as well.
- All the while, hope the old "bubble" baggage is left in the dust.

My two cents. What is the big head line in the news? Auction rate securities that were frozen and now have to be bought from the investors by the bank and the bank has to pay a hefty fine. A few State imposed fine and more to come. That means less capital for the banks, again. They will need to raise capital and the overseas investors are the prime candidates with a weak dollar. So I think this rally is bull crap because the weaker the dollar is, the easier it is to get a foreign investor to invest in a risky proposition.

The banks NEED more capital from abroad, because no one in the U.S. is stepping up except the taxpayer.

German GDP report expected to be down about 1%, but with a good first, shouldn't change market much (listening to Bloom in the back ground..), speeker thought that the next economy to contract a bit.

ING and AG Bank already reporting. No housing boom to bust in Europe. Inflation is high, but not out of hand, housing inventory from loss sales should be picked up quickly over there. Even with prices dropping, housing should remain a preimum in most areas. It's too wet to live outdoors. :)

Strong dollar means inexpensive I shares ;)

There is the +/- FV & add inflation & the rise of the dollar & the foreign markets are doing very bad & the only time it has a chance to rise is when both the United States & the Foreign Markets both have good days which is running about once a week.

The S Fund has really held up well the past 2 days and actually had a gain today in spite of a market down 109.

The rising dollar usually does not hurt the I fund because the Nikkei has been rising to compensate. The problem is the Nikkei has not gone up lately.

It appear Japan is in deep trouble and may soon be officially in a recession.

Europe shares turn flat after US inflation data

Thu Aug 14, 2008 8:40am EDT
LONDON, Aug 14 (Reuters) - European shares pared gains to trade flat on Thursday after U.S. data showed consumer inflation picked up by more than expected in July, cutting the chances interest rates will remain steady through the end of this year.
By 1235 GMT the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was flat at 1,179.40 points, versus 1,189.55 points just before the data. The index earlier rose by as much as 1.1 percent.
Banks became the largest drag on the index after the consumer inflation data. Royal Bank of Scotland dropped 2.8 percent, Barclays lost 3.4 percent and Banco Santander shed 1.5 percent.

no rate hike here until December - after the election.

You do realize that the election has nothing to do with the rise or reductions in the Federal Funds rate. History shows that the Governors of the Federal Reserve do not consider the ramifications of lowering or raising rates prior to the election.

2008 rates were falling then a slight increase
2004 rates were rising
2000 rates were rising
1996 rates were unchanged (minus January)
1992 rates were falling
1988 rates were rising
1984 rates were rising (a increase in early Nov)

As you can see almost every year rates were either rising or falling during the preceding months up to the election in November.

US STOCKS-Wall St extends gains after Bernanke comments
Fri Aug 22, 2008 10:18am EDT
(Updates with reaction to Bernanke comments)
NEW YORK, Aug 22 (Reuters) - U.S. stocks added to gains on Friday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the recent decline in commodity prices and stabilization of the U.S. dollar were encouraging. For details, see [ID:nWEQ000126].
The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI rose 143.30 points, or 1.25 percent, to 11,573.51. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index .SPX shot up 11.82 points, or 0.93 percent, to 1,289.54. The Nasdaq Composite Index .IXIC (http://www.reuters.com/finance/markets/index?symbol=us%21comp) climbed 24.66 points, or 1.04 percent, to 2,405.04.
The market was already broadly higher before Bernanke's speech at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City Economic Symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Expectations of an investment in U.S. bank Lehman Brothers (LEH.N: Quote (http://www.reuters.com/stocks/quote?symbol=LEH.N), Profile (http://www.reuters.com/stocks/companyProfile?symbol=LEH.N), Research (http://www.reuters.com/stocks/researchReports?symbol=LEH.N), Stock Buzz (http://reuters.socialpicks.com/stock/r/LEH)) underpinned an advance in shares of financial services companies.
Shares of No. 3 U.S. bank, JPMorgan (JPM.N: Quote (http://www.reuters.com/stocks/quote?symbol=JPM.N), Profile (http://www.reuters.com/stocks/companyProfile?symbol=JPM.N), Research (http://www.reuters.com/stocks/researchReports?symbol=JPM.N), Stock Buzz (http://reuters.socialpicks.com/stock/r/JPM)), more than 4 percent to $38.06.
A decline in oil prices boosted shares of big manufacturers, including United Technologies (UTX.N: Quote (http://www.reuters.com/stocks/quote?symbol=UTX.N), Profile (http://www.reuters.com/stocks/companyProfile?symbol=UTX.N), Research (http://www.reuters.com/stocks/researchReports?symbol=UTX.N), Stock Buzz (http://reuters.socialpicks.com/stock/r/UTX)) , airlines and consumer-oriented companies. Shares of major technology companies were another standout. United Tech was up 1.8 percent to $65.38. (Reporting by Ellis Mnyandu; Editing by Kenneth Barry)

U.S. dollar trims gains vs euro after Bernanke comments
Fri Aug 22, 2008 10:19am EDT
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. dollar trimmed gains against the euro on Friday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said a stable currency and a decline in commodity prices should help slow inflation this year and next.
His remarks pared back expectations of an U.S. interest rate increase this year, diminishing the dollar's appeal to global investors.
The euro rose as high as $1.4835 against the dollar from $1.4815 before Bernanke's remarks. Against the yen, the dollar held gains at 109.97 yen.
Bernanke spoke at an annual symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
