With Bernanke, Paulson, and perhaps the G7 nations talking about supporting a strong dollar as the reserve currency standard, can someone analize whether the I fund is a better choice than the C fund if a bounce is to be played?

With Bernanke, Paulson, and perhaps the G7 nations talking about supporting a strong dollar as the reserve currency standard, can someone analize whether the I fund is a better choice than the C fund if a bounce is to be played?I'll believe Paulson when he actually does something to support the dollar, he's being saying he supports a strong dollar ever since he came into office. Berneke has been lowering interest rates, which causes the dollar to get weaker - though I do understand what he was trying to do. If there actually is some movement by Paulson or Beneke (and/or others in the Administration) and the G7 to reach this goal, then it would be easier to see what the effects on C and I would be, depending on the policy.

Major +fv coming. Stayed away from this because of the possible ++FV coming. I Fund looks great for Monday. US DOLLAR will bounce off the unemployment report causing the I Fund to drop Friday. Too risky for tomorrow. Great for Monday.

I expect the USMs to do well, however that +.32 FV will not allow the I Fund to go postive. Also, I feel the USD will bounce on a very good unemployment report. As I am typing this the I FUND is -.60. and the C Fund is +.06. Looking for a nice bounce Monday for the I Fund off a good report today. Using my 2nd EFT from C FUND to The I Fund. GL

Why 2? The $ has dropped. And tsplookup puts at 0 gain/loss(except for previous -FV). Please don't say we need to drop another 100 points after noon. Isn't 269 point enough? Boy,lets hope so.

Can you enlighten me? I a little cornfused!
The dollar, when it falls, (adds)gives us $
So wouldn't it be a +FV (if by itself)?
Since the USM have dropped so much after noon, wouldn't that drop plus the drop in the $ cancel each other out?

Thanks in advance.

I gave up watching the fund prices on a daily basis....This one's my gov't free money deal now. Since the IFT limitations are now in full effect, I play the currency market. I'm around 2% a day and climbing. Funny, when I started, 2% of 300 was 6...now my nights are closer to 3% and I'm making my initial investment in interest a night. I can't wait until my interest earned a night is the GDP of Uraguay!!!!

Fortunately, I live near the cows in Hemet. So most of my commute to Corona is relaxing and uneventful. Ride the Harley almost everyday, even the day of the tornado in Mo Val. If I didn't come from Ohio originally, I'd think global warming had hit the first day I moved here. But I KNOW, they still get tons of snow back there!!!!!

Might have to reneg on the 30 to 40 cents however. Just did a SWAG, went to the TSP site, went back the number of years that I still have to retire, and wow, the I Fund really went up in that time span. I doubt it could drop that much, but who knows. Less than 5 years here, and since I dropped my investments to matching only, wouldn't mind making more than 3 or 4 cents a month the G fund is offering. Tried the F, barely got out ahead. C is out of the question. Small caps, well, depends on the next administration, and even if they do a stellar job, doubt California home prices will recover in 5 years (my other investment, might be even now, depends on the "buyer"). It's up to those across the Atlantic (and the input asia has) to carry us I fund believers into retirement (IMHO). Since I can't really afford to buy gold (not that I'd want to) the fiancee is going to let me "buy" her Euros when she gets here for holiday in July (avoiding exchange fees and such). I'd just as soon sit on that as anything else at this point since I'll be back over there before she can finally move here for good.

The excess that was going into the TSP, so far this year, has been invested into landscape trees. Figure it's about a 3 year investment, and kept the start up cost down to figure a 100% return. People that live in the desert like trees, especially ones that are already 6 foot tall. The tax benefits are not so bad either, but it is a lot of work. The Navy, city and builders (due to BRAC) are always looking for tid bits to decorate the SES's homes with :)

The remainder is going into assets, vintage motorcycle parts. Lots of items that haven't been seen in quite some time have become available as owners liquidate. Those are long term 10 to 12 years investments. It's hard to calculate the return, but I just figure it as income after retirement ( or inheritance for my son, which ever comes first).

Cash is getting pretty tight however working it this way. Fuel is cutting into the budget, but am pretty happy with the 26mpg my Cummins 2500 quad long bed got on last weekends 700 mile weekend trip. It beats the hell out of airline offerings :) Fuel in Topaz, Nv last weekend was $4.59, cheap by California standards. Being how the trip was to pick up a vintage motorcycle, getting the current 55 cents a mile back works out ok.

As far as food cost goes, my recently graduated son turned me on to GNC products. They have really put some energy back into this 52 two year old, and only cost about $45.00/month. The positive side effect has been appetite is down quite a bit, so smaller, lighter meals and more healthy stuff is going down the gob. Can't hurt to get health conscious this close to retirement.

Anyway, that's my "I" fund investment plan :) No one ever said life would be easy.

I'm still about 100 grand short of where I'd like to be in 5 years......

It sure would seem so. It's a game of "whose got the money", and how well can they hide it during the next administration as far as the U.S. goes. They already know in Europe who has the money, they lent it to us :) Fortunately for them, they didn't have that much in the first place, and don't have to print dollars to support the U.S. economy. All they have to deal with is their own little puddle of mud, as expensive as it is. Sorry, a bit of emotion put into an off topic subject :)

Attention K-Mart shoppers, We have a Blue Light special down Isle 12.
For the next 4 hours (until noon) we have the (I) Fund at a very high
discount due to FV. This discount might disapear by 7:30pm tonight,
however, the chances are high you'll see a similar type discount on
Monday. Only one catch, Limits have made this a No Return, No Refund
opportunity. Good Luck !

I agree.

I also noticed the discrepancy yesterday for a FV adjustment. There was enough of a discrepancy for a +FV adjustment, but it also looked like a good idea to have no +FV for Barclay.

The I- fund would be down over $0.30 today if the dollar was stable.

No typo. Right there above the prices it says

I wonder if that means the "G" will pay more often? Instead of 1 penny every 5 or 6 days, they might give .25 or .50.

Althought the market dropped later in the day, the dollar also dropped about 0.55% late in the day to warrant a FV.

The late dollar drop was enought for the FV.

I just use the EAFE estimate and the S&P500 current price.

Do you think the market will go up today for a +FV? I hope not. I just bought more I-fund shares. bargain hunting. :)

TSPGO also expects a +FV today.

Note: Expecting +FV today. S&P only 12 points away from 1280. Expecting hitting 1280 followed by strong rebound.

How do you 'BUY MORE I FUND SHARES'? I am assuming that you have only made one ITF this month or is this another account outside of the Gestapo TSP? Just curious, EA

Simply put, If he had 20% in the (I) Fund. He added to his position by
doing an IFT. That in turn, buys more shares at todays closing price.
(Cheaper then yesterdays closing price). :)

I think he wants to know how he did it if he already used his 2 IFT's for June...

Just for a warm fuzzy, linked to the Yahoo charts from the bottom of the tsptalk page and clicked 5 year average (I and C). Things don't look that bad from this perspective (not that I was invested much then).

How does Eric sing that song, "Always look on the brighter side of life", while nailed to a cross :).

I hope you are correct. The strategic oil reserves stops acceptance of 76,000 barrels a day on 1-July. That is not much to lower oil prices, but I hope something gets the market going.

Nikkei falls to 2-month low, exporters sold
Japan's Nikkei stock average was down 2.2 percent on Friday after earlier hitting a two-month low, led down by blue-chip exporters such as Honda Motor Co on a stronger yen, record oil prices and steep losses on Wall Street. Financial shares also slid, with top lender Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group down 3 percent, after Goldman Sachs forecast more write-downs at Citigroup and Merrill Lynch. A broad sell-off in the Tokyo market, which extended its losses to a seventh day, came after the Dow industrial average .DJI plunged to a 21-month low. The benchmark Nikkei .N225 ended the morning down 307.20 points at 13,515.12, after slipping as far as 13,481.78. The broader Topix index lost 2 percent to 1,317.48.

I've been hanging in the market (I & S) figuring is got to be bottoming out, then it bottoms out again and again. How low can it actually go before the market says enough is enough.

The I-fund is close to the year low of 21.41. If this does not hold, the I-fund could go as low as 18.30 according to chartists.

I still think we are in the Obama stock market slide.

You usually need a major panic to reach the bottom.

Hi Corvette,

Hard to believe it could go down to below 19.00... I was waiting to get in on Tues as it is getting close to 21 and then just buy and hold: because, it can only go up, doesn't it???

Will keep an eye on your postings Tues and Wed. I always had a special relationship with the I fund and don't want to lose it! Please help!!!! :D Just adding a little drama here , please don't think I am this
crazy, I am retired and in safe haven for now, but I do want to get in when we reach THE BOTTOM. NOW, THAT IS THE QUESTION: WHEN IS IT GOING TO HAPPEN... I will wait, I am a very patient person, good things come to us who know how to wait... ;)

Thank you for your input and your efforts in keeping us up to date on the I. This wait is driving me crazyyyyyy!!!!
