Apparently Obama is the only one in the picture that paid attention in 1st Grade, which is where I was taught that you only put your hand over your heart to say Pledge of Allegiance, and keep your hands at your sides when you sing/listen to the National Anthem. I've noticed over the years that a lot of people apparently have forgotten first grade lessons or never learned them in the first place.

Nope your are incorrect..Your grade school must of been in Moscow.

During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. -- United States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171 (http://www.stpeteblue.com/Flagcode.htm)

LOL, I spent first grade in one of the reddest northern states in the union. I decided to check around the web on the subject too. Apparently even some of the companies that make a living from citizen patriotism give guidance similar to what I was taught. Other people out there on the web are saying they were taught the same way I was, right, wrong or indifferent. Thing is to show attitude of respect during the anthem, according to how we were taught to show respect. All people in that photo were standing in attitudes of respect, most likely according to the way they were taught. Right, wrong or indifferent. Don't read something into it that isn't there, i.e. disrespect.

http://www.flagco.com/etiquette.html

...
When the National Anthem is played and the flag is not displayed, all present should stand and face toward the music. Those in uniform should salute ...All others should stand at attention [note, article does not say "all others should also salute"]. "When the flag is displayed, all present should face the flag and salute.

Maybe that flag company is based in Moscow. Better beware who you buy your flags from. :cheesy:

I'm SO glad we violently agree! Showing respect the way we are taught, is an entirely different matter from whether we were taught the proper way in the first place. So long as a person shows respect according to how they were taught, it says nothing negative about their level of patriotism. I have full confidence even a conservative can tell the difference between the two (Oh, the audacity of hope). OK, I'm done now.:)

1. He wanted to put a .50 cent tax on gasoline immediately. (imagine paying that now)

2. He abandoned the fight when he almost had it and then came back, then left again...(shows me he can't stick to a decision)

He is human unlike the other two and not use to Washington politics. Someone is going to have to start making the unpopular tough chose.

At first I kind of liked him for his simple talk ...no BS but the more I knew I didn't like him. I think he has kind of a Napoleon complex and if you didn't agree w/him you're out. He worked hard and then gave up....what a guy....and then some story about his daughter...I don't know if true or not...so he quit. If I had worked on his campaign I would have been really pissed (can I say that here) and would not support the 'little dictator' again...never.

I'm voting for McCain. Never Obama....color doesn't matter...and gender doesn't matter, but I can't take all the socialist/liberal views and weird friends/associates he has. I grew up in the midwest...my parents voted Dem; but they were the conservative dems ...the old types that cared about unions and people, and a typical marriage (man and women). If that offends someone...I don't care...get over it.

We are in Iraq to contain Iran and stabilize the Middle East region. The more insurgents we can kill there the better off the whole world will be - it's that simple. We will always have some kind of position or presence there just like we do in Germany or Japan or Italy.I'm not paying taxes to "contain" and "stabilize" any other country or rebuild THEIR infrastructure. I want MY borders protected and MY infrastructure maintained. And that's NOT the excuse this administration gave to invade a sovereign country anyway. Wasn't it WMD's? Amazing how that has changed over the course of this farce.

I voted for Bush - mainly because he seemed to stand for a "better cause" and I was ready for something different.

I voted for Kerry - because he promised support for 'Stem Cell Research' - and recognized the importance of Scientific Advancments. Whereas Bush adamantly opposed it.

So the last election for me stood wholly on the grounds of Science and the support or denial thereof.

This election has no guarantees - as one (or the other) may say something to the effect of pushing Brain Research as the Highest Priority - or something else along the lines of huge significance.

Right now - A leader displaying international relationships in a superior style, and one who has the backing of the most prominent economic and military experts (who non-biasly and objectively support his proposals) seems like the better pick.

The one that used to contain the Fiscal Conservatives, then kicked them of the Party.
Voted for McCain in 2000. Now he wants to tax cut and keep the wars going. Which means, you have to keep borrowing.
Not this time, voting for Obama. Both candidates are increasing spending, it's just a matter of when the bill comes due. I prefer pay as you go. Borrow and spend just puts off the pain until after I'm on a fixed income (retired).

Buster honey, that article doesn't say anything about his wife making him change anything. converting from Islam to Christianity is not like changing your shirt, it's a huge potentially deadly deal, certainly to someone who is a serious follower of Islam.

The book he wrote about his growing up (grade school, Buster, grade school) years in Indonesia and later teenager years in US, was published in 94 when he was still a state senator. He started attending church in Chicago long before he ever met his wife. Let's try to keep the facts straight, or at least straighter, ok? A little broader reading might help with that.

works for me. Something else to chew on...

New Tax Credits
A variety of new tax credits for self-employed and low- income workers, homeowners, and parents of college students would ensure that no families making under $250,000 would see a tax rise (who here would get hit, if this is the plan?), they said in the conference call. The average real tax burden for those earning $1.5 million a year would increase to about 25 percent from about 21 percent they pay now, Goolsbee said in the call.
Furman and Goolsbee said Obama's plan would result in a tax burden amounting to 18.2 percent of the economy. The Congressional Budget Office says the tax bite this year will be 18.7 percent of gross domestic product, rising to 19 percent in 2009.
Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers (http://search.bloomberg.com/search?q=Lawrence+Summers&site=wnews&client=wnews&proxystylesheet=wnews&output=xml_no_dtd&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&filter=p&getfields=wnnis&sort=date:D:S:d1), an Obama adviser, said Republicans were wrong when they warned of economic disaster in the 1990s because of the tax policies of then-President Bill Clinton (http://search.bloomberg.com/search?q=Bill+Clinton&site=wnews&client=wnews&proxystylesheet=wnews&output=xml_no_dtd&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&filter=p&getfields=wnnis&sort=date:D:S:d1). During that time, the U.S. experienced a period of sustained economic growth.
``The idea that a return to the tax policies of the 1990s would somehow damage the economy in some substantial way is supported by neither theory nor evidence nor the longer-term history,'' Summers said.

Good article. Very accurate. Obama is telling each group what they want to hear, as all politicians do and have always done. "Different strokes for different folks" as the saying goes. One thing that catches my eye, though, is this phrase:

"...government must step in and redistribute pieces of the pie. That requires massive transfers of wealth through government taxing and spending..."

Isn't this is precisely what this administration has been doing - stealing from the middle class and giving to the rich? The biggest transfer of public money to private interests in history just took place with the BSC and Fannie/Freddie bailouts. The tax increases to pay for it haven't come yet...but they will, and the next two administrations will be blamed for it. Tax cuts for the rich (not middle class) and industry, wealth transfers to save the big boys butts, all at the expense of the middle class. Real income has declined for everyone except the truly wealthy, theirs has increased (google the stats). Reverse socialism? Take the money from the middle class and instead of redistributing to the masses, consolidate it in the hands of the few? IMO the consolidation of wealth and power and encroachments on personal liberties that have taken place during the past 8 years are alarming. It doesn't matter which party it is, they're all after our money for their own interests, and we get to keep less of it every year. "Shut up and pay up." It's time for the middle class to stand up and back up the Constitution, and call for a return to the principles our Founders taught us. Respect for the Constitution, the rule of law, individual liberty, sound money, and a noninterventionist foreign policy. I'll vote for whoever can provide them. Step forward, PLEASE!

Fodder..I didn't bother checking this out..frankly, it's just for amusement..:)

The two presidential candidates have given their top-10 lists of favorite songs to Blender magazine. Obama likes newer songs like "Touch the Sky" by Kanye West and "Ready or Not" by the Fugees, but he also goes for classics like Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" and Franklin's "Think."

McCain chose two ABBA songs: "Dancing Queen" and "Take A Chance On Me." He also likes "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys and "Blue Bayou" by Roy Orbison.

He chose "I've Got You Under My Skin" by Sinatra, while Obama chose Sinatra's "You'd Be So Easy to Love."

Obama also chose songs by Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones, Nina Simone, U2, and "Yes We Can" by will.i.am, which mentions Obama.

McCain's top 10 also included songs by Merle Haggard, Dooley Wilson, Louis Armstrong, Neil Diamond and [The Platters. ]

Both candidates are pretty much qualified, and I won’t move to Canada if one or the other is elected. I just hope they stop those silly arguments about having air in their tires and start talking about bigger issues! I don’t like negative campaigns. I would prefer to hear a candidate who has a positive attitude and provide solutions with substance. McCain served on the same aircraft carrier (USS Forrestal) that I served on in 1991, so I might lean his way being an ex Navy man. That's a good point..and honestly I ask myself the same question...Like, who cares what the CNC is, as long as he/she runs the country according to the Constitution. But then that raises another question, what is the Constitution founded and written under?;)

But looking and hearing what the average Joe or Josephine (Majority of the Voters) are saying, is that, our Country's doctrine was founded on Christianity and not Muslim....Period!

I'd say the Constitution may have been written by people who bore the Christian title, but it is founded on the assumption that no person or government can be trusted and all are selfish, so we need to create positions that have conflicting self-interests to balance out the powers. So, I have no idea if "Christian" doctrine says to have no trust in anyone or to dictate to others how to live.

If a Christian is to be Christ-like, then I'm not sure if we'd be setting up Constitutions and fighting for freedom. I figure "the truth shall set you free", "My kingdom is not of this world" and "If anyone hits you on the one cheek, turn to him the other." VERY FEW of us can claim to be following His way, so I'm not sure if many of us can really be called Christians - the title of which originally meant "little Christs."

I for one am thrilled that the Constitution is Christian based. One just needs to read up on Sharia Law (Muslim) and their eyes would really be opened. Of course with Sharia Law, Hollywood would cease to exist at least in the form that we know, the crime rate would be reduced to nothing and well for those who aren't happy with their wives, would be able to get rid of them, almost as easy as snapping your fingers. The US was founded because of the religious persecution in England and Western Europe, but those religions and practices back then was a walk in the park compared to Sharia Law.

Christians are far from perfect, just forgiven, that's the reason God allowed his son Jesus come to earth, die and arise from the dead was for our sins. :D

But that's just my beliefs and I would never even attempt to convert anyone to Christianity or whatever you want to call it, cause that's between you and God and I just worry about me and mine. Religion is even touchier than politics. Acts 2:38

Haven't we lost enough status with the rest of the world already? IF this is the future Vice President, what kind of credibility do you think she is going to have with other world leaders - do you really expect them to take her seriously and not have visions of THIS in their heads instead??

Sorry L2R -I didn't mean to offend. Personally, I would like her as our VP. The way she tried to, and did stand up for the people of her State spoke volumes to me! I think this is a rare characteristic, and much of what this nation needs - polititians that will stand for us, the people's needs, and thereby uphold what was our Constitution's intent - Government for the people, by the people... (In many ways, I feel these roles have slipped/even reversed, perhaps most evident with the recent "bailouts", anyway enough on this.)

Again, apologies, I knew my post was "fringe," but I am glad that you jumped on me for it - because it gave me pause, but mostly opportunity to voice what I really think of her & what I think what she stands for. That is, I approve of her work, her fighting spirit (quite a balancing act btwn career and family), and I think she comes along, in such a time of adversity, bringing a hope that I'd like to see spread like a wildfire, especially among our other politians. IMO, this is much needed in order to overcome what otherwise may lie ahead.

Hessian..no need to apologise for anything, it is your opinion and you are entitled to it..I'm sick and tired of certain people here shoving their self righteousness down our throats, because it goes against their inane grain to look at everything and consume everything that is negative and the only the one view is theirs....If someone doesn't agree, and prefers the dark side to everyone and everything in politics, fine!..But by God, don't condemn me for what I believe in and look for any little thing to find fault with, otherwise there is the IGNORE feature that you can put me on and not worry so much about what I post..I am using this feature now for a certain individual that finds nothing better in their life other than to badger and force what they think is right on me or to belittle ....Hessian, What you or I post as either humor of fact, is your privilege and not to be condescended on.

Besides that..What world leaders are reading these forums?..I seriously doubt any are.

Hi Hessian,

Sorry for flaming and it was not directed at you personally, but at all the "boys" on the MB who can't restrain their hormones and natural exuberance. I don't object to the posting of titillating material on the MB in the proper place, or even the random posting in various threads. I do object to photoshopping Ms. Palin's image in such a manner. She could very well be the next VP and possibly future President. Let's focus on her capabilities and leadership abilities, and not her physical attributes, which are self-evident. We all visit the MB to learn from each other, I don't want to have to find another source of information just to avoid seeing Ms. Palin's head pasted on someone else's semi-clad body. I am not the only woman here who feels this way. Again, sorry for the flame.

Buster I was typing while you posted so I'm editing this in. I completely agree that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but photoshopped images and sexist comments are NOT opinions nor are they humorous, they are offensive to the women on the MB. Right, world leaders aren't reading this MB, but those images were picked up from the web, which means they are circulating worldwide. Focus on the issues and keep sex out of it. Don't try to convince me that's not what it's about, your "I'd hit it" comment made it quite evident. Keep your ignore button on and you won't be so hot and bothered.

This is why I can't understand why people think Obama is great. He calls McCain out on the economic comment that someone be fired. He offers no solution by stating that he will wait for the current administration needs to sort it out.

Easy. Go to G. Also, log into employeeexpress.gov and increase your withholding allowance to 99, then change your home address to a state that has no income tax. These are those states:

Alaska
Florida
Nevada
South Dakota
Texas
Washington
Wyoming

Surely, you have a relative in one of those states that can get your mail for you. Then make sure you max out your TSP deposits. Then go home and sell all of your junk on eBay.

By the end of the year, you could come out on top. But by next year, you could be doing time. :D

Well, as someone else said here on the MB today....."I don't look good in stripes"....

.....and, I'm not currently a Fed, so EmployeeExpress isn't an option, either ! Remember, the Board has a diversity of members, in various stages of their careers ! No offense intended, friend ! :D

Funny you should mention FL....that's where our "family" is, and is where the wife and I grew up...our "home state" ! I'm currently working on getting another job back there with the Feds, but no luck so far <sigh> I'm not sure I want to have to put my home on the market, for a move to FL right now, anyway :) In a perfect world, I'd get an offer for a FL position that also paid relocation expenses :D

I'm blessed to have a wife with a pretty good-paying job, who is humoring me as I look for a Fed job down there !
