View Full Version : How will you spend the Bush Check?

James48843

The President is proposing an economic stimulus check (of budget deficit funds), to spur the economy.

Today, Nancy Pelosi and the House agreed to a plan that would be as follows:

Individual taxpayers would get up to $600 in rebates, working couples $1,200 and those with children an additional $300 per child under the agreement. In a key concession to Democrats, 35 million families who make at least $3,000 but don't pay taxes would get $300 rebates.

The rebates would phase out gradually for individuals whose adjusted gross income exceeds $75,000 and for couples with incomes above $150,000. Contributions to IRA and 401(k) retirement accounts and health savings accounts would not count toward the income limit.

The Senate has not yet approved- but will probably come along with something along those lines-

So, the question becomes- what do you plan to do with the check?

Will you buy something?

Will you pay off credit card debt?

Will you "stimulate" the economy?

What will YOU do with your "Bush Check"?

Its looking like a good time to buy a piece of the market for the long term. Doubt we will get prices this low again in a very long time (if ever).

On the other hand, whatre the odds that the Best Buy and WalMarts will start showcasing their on sale hdtvs conveniently priced at $1200 right beside a sign saying they cash refund checks. Any takers?

I'd assume, especially if you have to add back in TSP and other contributions back into your income, that there will be a fair number of people here that won't get a rebate.

Get my car fixed, the alignment is messed up due to trying to drive on the last snow day and hitting a snow bank. Probably broke an axle. I guess that counts as helping the U.S. economy. Long term, I think this is just an attempt by Bush to appear to be caring about the economy, since the debt increase is going to come to roost after he's gone. ;P

Hahaha. You're absolutely right. Why pay down that credit card debt from Christmas or start a Roth IRA when you can buy a new TV? I'm guessing Wally World will have TV's for $1100, no interest for 5 months and if you buy it now you get a trial Direct TV subscription that will go up $100 in 90 days unless you cancel. Meanwhile, spend the money from the tax rebate on a vacation to get away from all the worries of the real world! Talk about making a bad situation worse!

Although I was only a kid in the mid 70's when Pres. Ford stimulated the economy with taxpayer rebate checks, I do recall they started the end of the recession that had the collapse of the US steel industries, 9-10% unemployment, double-digit inflation and a stagnant economy.

It was something like $15B which wound up being $125 or per taxpayer.

Hopefully in this case, it will head off, or at least, dampen the current recession specter.

We are going to spend the money on a few important things:

1. A new keyboard for the computer. The space bar does not work all of the time and it is driving us crazy. LOL

2. Pay off some of the debt on one of our credit cards. The card will them likely be used to buy something we want...so there will be little decrease in our debt.

3. Vacation - Looking to go on a cruise.

4. Buy a few shares of our current favorite stock (FPL Group).

5. Last but not least...More chrome for the bike.

We do have a question about the tax incentive package.

We have heard the plan includes $1200 for working couples and an additional $300 per child. Does anyone know what the maximum number of children that someone can get the extra $300 for?

We have two young children....so we are assuming we would see a check for $1800 (if the senate agrees).

No cap on number of kids at this point that I can see:

ECONOMIC STIMULUS DETAILS
The rebates would go to about 116 million families. - They would include $28 billion in cheques to 35 million working families not addressed by U.S. President George W. Bush's original proposal. - The bulk of the rebates -- more than 70 per cent -- would go to individuals who pay taxes. - Individuals who pay income taxes would get up to $600, working couples $1,200 and those with children an additional $300 per child under the agreement. - Workers who make at least $3,000 but don't pay taxes would get $300 rebates. - The rebates would phase out gradually for individuals whose income exceeds $75,000 and couples with incomes above $150,000, aides said. - Individuals with incomes up to $87,000 and couples up to $174,000 would get partial rebates. The caps are higher for those with children. - The first rebate payments could begin going out in May, and most people could have them by July. - The rebates were expected to cost about $100 billion, and the package also includes close to $50 billion in business tax cuts

From CNN.com

Stimulus proponents need to navigate Senate

Democrats have said they might try to push for the addition of provisions on unemployment benefits, food stamps, road repair and summer jobs for youths. Some of those ideas were dropped after from previous versions of the deal.

Aren't some of these provisions exactly what was negotiated out of the House plan to get it to pass? My big question is "What would more unemployment benefits add to the economy?"

If the Senate adds the unemployment benefits back in, that will only increase the number of days before it becomes official. The House will have to renegotiate their bill and the Republicans already said they did not want anything extra in the plan.

It means about as much to me as the guy making 75k and paying 5% lower taxes.

I know, it's pretty much chump change for anyone working in the federal govt. Let's just give $2000 to everyone in the 10% tax bracket and call it welfare because it's not a "tax rebate" as some like to refer to it.

You are right about it not being a "tax rebate." Its another attempt at the government trying to spend its way out of a hole that they got in with spending to begin with.

And Im not saying that $600 isn't chump change--because it isn't. But it does raise an eyebrow because you arent getting the same break that a GS-5 gets when you are making SES compensation levels. Not picking here, just pointing out the BFO.

(And we need to talk, because I am looking for a job. :D No seriously...)

The way it reads is you have to add back in your contributions to retirement funds and health savings accounts, right?
'Contributions to IRA and 401(k) retirement accounts and health savings accounts would not count toward the income limit.'

So, if you have an AGI of $60,000, but contribute $15,000 to tsp and $5,000 to a HSA your income would really be $80,000.

How the Rebate Works
By The Associated Press – 56 minutes ago
How Americans in different financial situations would fare under the rebate plan proposed by House leaders and the White House.
_An individual with $2,500 in earned income in 2007: Disqualified because income fell below the $3,000 threshold. No rebate.
_A married couple with no children, with adjusted gross income of $100,000 in 2007: Would qualify for the full $1,200 couples. A $1,200 rebate.
_A worker with one child, who earned $9,000 and owed no taxes in 2007: Would qualify for the $300 rebate available to individuals who pay no taxes but earned at least $3,000, plus an additional $300 for the child. A $600 rebate.
_A couple with income of $145,000 in 2007, with three children: Would qualify for the full $1,200 for couples, plus $300 for each child. A $2,100 rebate.
_A couple with income of $160,000 in 2007 with two children: Would qualify for a partial rebate, reduced by 5 percent for every $1,000 in income above the $150,000 threshold. An $1,800 rebate — $1,200 for the couple plus $300 per child — would go down by 50 percent for this family. A $900 rebate.
_A couple with income of $200,000 and four children: Disqualified because their income exceeded $174,000, the phase-out limit. No rebate.
_An individual with adjusted gross income of $23,000 and no dependents would get a rebate of $600.
_A couple with adjusted gross income of $160,000 and two children would get a rebate of $1,300.
_A couple with adjusted gross income of $184,000 and two children would get a $100 rebate.

I think if you don't cash the check for a certain time period, maybe a year, it reverts back to the treasury.

Personally, I think if you don't want the money, you're better off giving it to charity than letting it revert back to the Treasury because its not guaranteed that it will go to paying off the debt. At least this way, it will go back into the economy. By giving it back to the government, it will probably just be spent on something else.

How to use the rebate

As you may have heard the Bush Administration said each and every one
of us would now get a nice rebate.

If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, all the money will go to China.

If we spend it on gasoline it will all go to the Arabs.

If we purchase a computer it will all go to India, or Taiwan.

If we purchase fruit and vegetables it will all go to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatamala.

If we purchase a good car it will all go to Japan and Mexico.

If we purchase useless crap it will all go to Taiwan and none of it will help the American economy.

Now, it's clear that we need to keep that money here in America. That's what the money was intended for- for the everyday American, to help stimulate the American economy.

So it's clear. There is only ONE WAY that the "Stimus rebate" check is going to help our economy.

The only way is to keep that money here at home.

And the only way to do that is...buy hookers and beer, since those
are the only businesses still in the US.

If I remember correctly we got one of these a few years ago. I can't find my records right now but I THINK it was taxable as income by the STATE - because it's not a refund of overpaid federal withholding, or a tax credit, the state viewed it as INCOME. Not taxed by the FED though..

It IS taxable by the states. Each state can decide whether to tax it or not. Alabama IS taxing it. New York is NOT taxing it. Most of the states haven't decided yet. Don't believe everything your taxman tells you. Read more here.

http://www.walletpop.com/2008/03/07/tax-tips-will-i-have-to-pay-state-tax-on-my-federal-tax-rebate/

http://www.savvysugar.com/1099622

New York won't be taxing the rebate checks (http://www.ny.gov/governor/press/0221083.html/) because, as explained by NY Governor Eliot Spitzer, "During these challenging fiscal times, it is particularly important for all New Yorkers to know that they will retain the full amount of this rebate, and will not be taxed on these amounts next year.” Oregon (http://www.oregon.gov/DOR/PERTAX/faq-fedrebate.shtml/), Iowa (http://www.state.ia.us/tax/news/econstim.html/), and California (http://www.ftb.ca.gov/aboutFTB/newsroom/Federal_Rebates.shtml/) have all followed suit and will not be taxing their residents on the stimulus rebate checks.
If you live in Alabama, it seems your state is planning on taxing the checks (http://www.bankrate.com/brm/story_content.asp?story_uid=24709&prodtype=tax/) because its budget could use the $55 million it would receive from doing so. And if you're sitting on the edge of your taxpayer seat and can't wait for your state to make an announcement, Bankrate has a directory (http://www.bankrate.com/brm/itax/state/state_tax_home.asp?caret=1e/) of every state's department of revenue along with phone numbers and you could try giving them a friendly call. You know, just to check in.

2008 Federal Economic Stimulus

Individual Stimulus Payments
For New Jersey gross income tax purposes the treatment of the Federal stimulus payment will correspond to the Federal treatment. The payment will not be considered taxable income and should not be reported on the taxpayer’s 2008 gross income tax return.

Taxpayers who are filing a 2007 Federal income tax return only to receive the economic stimulus payment and who do not normally need to file a New Jersey income tax return are not required to file a 2007 New Jersey gross income tax return unless their income is above the filing threshold.

The federal government is sending each and everyone of us a $600 rebate.

If we spend that money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to China.

If we spend it on gasoline it will go to the Arabs.

If we purchase a computer it will go to India.

If we purchase fruit and vegetables it will go to Mexico, Honduras, and
Guatemala.

If we purchase a good car it will go to Japan.

If we purchase useless crap it will go to Taiwan ... and none of it will
help the American economy.

The only way to keep that money here at home is to buy prostitutes,
weed, beer, cigarettes, whiskey, and tattoos, since these are the only
products still produced in the USA.

Thank you for your help & please support the U.S.

Maybe I'll get an electric bike to commute to work. :p

Seriously though, there's a $350 e-bike for sale that would work. Cheap battery only lasts a year though. At $80 a pop for batteries and gas at $3.60/gal I'd have to ride it every day for 2.5 years to break even. :(

Motto of this "conservative" administration: "spend like there's no tomorrow...and encourage everyone else to do the same."

When did the government start encouraging SPENDING instead of SAVING?

Instant gratification. Bleh. Get yours now and let tomorrow take care of itself.

not trying to rain on your parade Buster. I just find this whole "conservative" administration a big joke. Democrats aren't any better but at least they are "pay as you go" even if it is tax and spend. We need a new system. Two party system is broken.

Very nice! What do you recommend for a camcorder that has digital still capability? I know absolutely nothing about cameras.:rolleyes:

Well, my dishwasher decided how I'm going to spend my part of the check (cue in coffee grinder sound for the fifth time this year). Former owners of the house are very nice people but with 7 kids, repair guy keeps finding legos, bolts, screws, and all sorts of little items in it - and next repair is replacing the entire motor - when you get there its time to think about new.

I'll let the sig other figure out what he's going to buy with his half.

LOL, the camcorder I have I bought when my daughter was born, 10 years ago! :D

Translation, I don't know anything about camcorders.

Though the dig. camera I have ordered supposedly records video in HD.

Pretty good indeed..I really think the F fund will be the safest place and to get a few dollars of profit till the end of the month..the C & S are on shakey ground right now and some of the technicals are pointing to a serious down turn, near term....Says the Magic 8 Ball;)

Methinks I might lock this week's F profits into G for next week then back to F at the end of the week for the rest of May. Maybe a small dip into I...OSM following USM. I've been waiting for an opportunity. 90%G/10%I maybe....

I'm going to spend my check by buying a laptop. Actually - - confession time - - it's already in my hands. :p

I recently retired but have already been asked to come back as a contractor for a couple of projects. (I have expert experience in a very esoteric part of my old job, and that is turning out to be fairly lucrative.)

Anyway, the laptop is proving to be very handy EXCEPT that I HATE the new Vista operating system. Anyone out there who is planning to buy a computer in the next year, run screaming from this OS! It's not compatible with anything, even stuff that it says it's compatible with. Patches coming out daily. A real mess!

Vista eats lots of memory just for a fancy layout, and, as the Lady says, a lot of hardware doesn't like it. Biiigggg Micro$soft mistake. BTW our Department upgraded early this year...to XP - due to security concerns with Vista.

I've been using 64 bit Vista for about 18 months without any compatibility issues (32 or 64 bit apps). Haven't even had a single BSOD.

What apps are causing problems for you?

My Dell printer wouldn't work, even after spending three days on the phone to India, chatting with their helpdesk. I gave up and bought a new printer. Can't get all of my Quicken software to work right. Even my Hoyle games (LOTS of Hoyle games ....) hate Vista.

Bottom line is it's my fault. I didn't do my homework before I bought my laptop or I would have paid the "upgrade" fee to go BACK to XP!:( I'm still seriously considering it.
