Hurricane season just started and the “Hurricane Central” link to the weather channel is what I used to monitor storms last year. Their forecasts and actual tracks will help keep you one step ahead as they will move the stock markets.

I have been at sea during two really bad hurricanes. One was in the south pacific on the USS Enterprise. It was so severe that some of our F-14 aircraft were breaking their tie down chains. The other one was during hurricane Hugo on the USS Roosevelt, but that wasn’t too bad because we didn’t get too close to it, but the winds over the flight deck were still pretty bad. Anyway, maybe this link will help you, good luck!:cool:

My Ex’s name isn’t on the list either, but might be in 2013 when her payments stop!

I use to live in Brunswick, Georgia many moons ago after I left the Navy, nice place. But if you live along the coast you might get wet if you plan on an outdoor BBQ on Saturday!

You should check out weather underground. Ilike their hurricane tracker better as it's easier to move around.

http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/

Very cool way to track the hurricanes. The tracking maps and model forecasts are great tools.

I hope everyone weathers this season safely. Last season was a blessing (zero landfalls in the Atlantic due to intense sand storms from Africa affecting the Atlantic hurricane genesis region), but this season is shaping up to be a monster. The weather underground blogs are fascinating and informative.:cheesy: I'm a self confessed weather geek (there's a EE in every Geek):D

Good luck to everyone on the coast. ( I couldn't get Allstate to insure me as they will no longer write policies for coastal areas - sucks - I liked Allstate) :(

Malyla,

Please tell me there's no hurricane scheduled for last week of June, I'll be trying out my new polka dot bikini in PC Beach then!

It's a family tradition that I've seen through 3 husbands and all my/our/their children.

One summer, we actually arrived there, and couldn't even stay the night because hurricane was bearing down (guess we forgot to check the weather channel.)

Yep, I like the underground's models page. I think it gives you a better idea of probable path than the 3/5 day cone.

This tropical low is forming in the Central Atlantic, so you might want to keep an eye out for it to develop over the next week or so.

I’m still trying to recover my stock losses in July, so don’t even think about becoming a storm named Dean since that is my middle name!!

Basic info… It’s still too early to tell… But you might want to think about what it would do to the market if it becomes our first storm of the season.:cool:

The other area of interest is Tropical Depression #4. It is located some 1,900 miles to the east of the Lesser Antilles over the far eastern Atlantic Ocean. The depression should strengthen as it races off to the west at 20 mph. It is anticipated that this system will gain tropcial storm status during the next 24 hours and would be called Dean.:D

Tropical Depression 4 has now been upgraded to Tropical Storm Dean, the fourth named system of the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season. It is located in the deep Atlantic centered in between the Lesser Antilles and the northwest coast of Africa. Dean is expected to gradually strengthen, reaching hurricane intensity prior to nearing the Lesser Antilles this weekend. Vacationers and residents of the Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico should monitor Dean very closely.

My wife and I were in Ocho Rios, Jamaica the first week of May. Most of the major buildings and hotels are built out of concrete. However, there are a lot of shacks built out of plywood and corrugated tin that will be blown away.

There is another storm that could threaten Florida later this week, but it’s still a little too early… Enclosed a link from the hurricane center… Everyone have a great day and good luck with your TSP accounts!:cool:

The way I understand it, we are under the influence of El Nino this year. That means that the possibly of major hurricanes hitting the Gulf of Mexico area is unlikely do to a change in the weather patterns. The winds will basically be blowing from the West and take the tops out of the storms before they can form into hurricanes.

This Weather Report is written by nnuut and is not guaranteed to be correct, nnuut holds no responsibility for damage caused by Hurricanes or other cyclonic storms hitting the continental USA in 2009.:)

Every year come June, I cross my fingers. My dad finally just last year got my sister's roof repaired from 05. He had to travel from the Rockies to get it done, don't think he'll be able to make that trip again, he's getting up there. Sis just doesn't have what it takes to get it done by herself.

I'm flying out of Washington DC on Friday morning, so I should be able to miss the storm… It looks like Irene won't be a Huge Hurricane at this time… My brother who works in Miami is going to fly his Cessna 182 North early this week as he only has a Tee Hanger in South Florida… Too bad this storm is not headed for Texas as they need the Rain!! My other brother lives in Jacksonville Florida and has never risen out a Hurricane before.

Being from California, I'd never experienced any hurricanes or typhoons until I moved to Okinawa. We had one back in May that ripped down half the trees in the forest adjacent to our house, and rattled our walls so hard I thought for sure our windows would break. While we were in the States earlier this month, there was another one that lasted almost 3 days! Glad to have missed it. It cleared out some more trees and left us with a clearer view of the Pacific!

I hope you and your brothers stay safe, AG!

I was stationed in Norfolk VA and we’ve had a couple Hurricanes back in the 1990‘s.. This persuaded me to invest in a good ole Honda Generator which I still own. I rode out Hugo on an Aircraft Carrier a good distance from the eye, but we did some Rockin N Rolling... Also rode out a very large one while serving on the USS Enterprise in the South Pacific... The winds were so strong we were breaking chains on one of our F14 Tomcats on the flight deck... LOL... I also deployed a couple of times for the Feds in Texas to repair damage after Katrina, etc.... So, I respect their power...

I was going back into Stocks Aug 22nd, but changed my mind at the last minute due to concerns over Hurricane Irene. I don’t think it will turn into a major storm, but when I seen the Weather channel post it could be a CAT 2 or 3, that was just a little too much risk for my account, especially since I have a negative 5.3 YTD!!!... I still have one IFT left and I’m ready to pull the trigger later this month...:cool:

Just what I need to hear! Not knowing what we may have heard about the earthquake, my son called to let us know he was okay in Leesburg.
However, my 15 yo grandson is riding out Irene, as the cruise ship he is on (thank you, ex-in-laws!) is circling around out in the Bahamas waiting for the seas to calm. Getting this info third hand is unsettling! :worried:

I think it is one of Royal Carribean's - it is a new ship, this is the first cruise out for it. They are/were supposed to be into St Thomas today. My son is getting a root canal at the moment - maybe he'll call back later to clarify...

Royal Caribbean
Monarch of the Seas (http://www.tsptalk.com/reviews/review.cfm?ShipID=77) will not call on CocoCay, the line's private Bahamian island, Tuesday. The ship, which left Port Canaveral Monday on a four-night Bahamas cruise, is in Nassau today and will spend the next two days at sea before returning to Port Canaveral Friday.

Majesty of the Seas (http://www.tsptalk.com/reviews/review.cfm?ShipID=76) will not be able to call on CocoCay Wednesday. Instead, the ship is sailing directly to Key West, where it will arrive at 4 p.m. on Wednesday and stay overnight until 6 p.m. on Thursday. Majesty is scheduled to conclude its four-night Bahamas and Florida cruise in Miami on Friday.

Royal Caribbean (http://www.tsptalk.com/reviews/cruiseline.cfm?CruiseLineID=32) reversed the itinerary for Oasis of the Seas (http://www.tsptalk.com/reviews/review.cfm?ShipID=368), which left Fort Lauderdale on Saturday for a week-long Western Caribbean cruise. The ship visited Cozumel on Monday; is spending Tuesday at sea; calling on Falmouth, Jamaica on Wednesday; and visiting Labadee, the line's private peninsula in Haiti, on Thursday. Oasis will spend Friday at sea before returning to Fort Lauderdale on Saturday as scheduled.

Freedom of the Seas (http://www.tsptalk.com/reviews/review.cfm?ShipID=358), which left Sunday from Port Canaveral on a week-long Western Caribbean cruise, is sailing a reversed itinerary. The ship is now calling on Cozumel (Tuesday), Grand Cayman (Wednesday), Falmouth, Jamaica (Thursday) and Labadee (Friday).

Oasis' sister ship, Allure of the Seas (http://www.tsptalk.com/reviews/review.cfm?ShipID=530), is visiting all the ports originally scheduled on its week-long Caribbean cruise, but in a slightly different order. The ship will visit Nassau, Bahamas on Saturday (August 27) instead of Monday (August 22). Visits to St. Thomas (Wednesday) and St. Maarten (Thursday) will take place as planned.

Royal Caribbean has scrambled the order for Serenade of the Seas (http://www.tsptalk.com/reviews/review.cfm?ShipID=282)' seven-night Southern Caribbean cruise, which left from San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Sunday. The ship is now visiting Aruba (Tuesday), Curacao (Wednesday), St. Kitts (Friday) and St. Thomas (Saturday).

ok - got it - thanx, PO ! It certainly is interesting -
Apparently the group had some rough seas, but tolerated before docking at St. Thomas. At one of the beach parties, then, the crew didn't label the two different containers of kool-aide, and one of the teenage cousins really took a liking to the vat with the rum addition!
