Question on the weekly tracker. Does the TSP Long Term Allocation refer to the aggressive one?Yes. That's because the moderate and conservative approaches are not looking to maximize gains like the aggressive approach. Capital preservation becomes the focus.

Congratulations to FundSurfer for generating the highest return in 2006 with a gain of 24.40% !
It was a close battle as there were full and partial year returns from a handful of members over 20%.
Pointman actually ended up with a higher return but he didn't start getting tracked until the end of March. Very impressive!
We'll get the full tally when Rokid returns after the holiday. Nice job!

Congrats to the top 2006 accounts! I was planning on sending the top 3 or 5 returns something for their achievement but I decided to go with the 7 accounts that were over 20%.
1 - Fundsurfer 24.40%
2 - Griffin 23.86%
3 - Mayday 22.23%
4 - Showme 21.81%
5 - sugarandspice 21.77%

I'm going to get something like shirts, hats, or something else cool ordered once I get a final version of the new logo all set. It may take a few weeks to get that logo and an order for the merchandise completed. I'll contact the winners via PM once they are ready.

My guess, and I hope I'm wrong for their sake, is that the ones who did well last year, and started well this year, have remained aggressive the whole time in spite of market concerns. That worked well, but they will be hurt most IF (big if) the market turns south.
It's the ones who can change gears who will be rewarded in that case.
G Fund F Fund C Fund S Fund I Fund

I'm anxious to see how many beat what funds for January. Don't know if they will do the tally at 1/31 or at 2/2.
I believe I beat the C fund but certainly not the S fund, as of 1/31.
I just read above posts, and appreciate the offer of a reward, but truly I don't want anybody spending money on shipping anything, not to mention on the gift itself. I feel the other way, that I should be sending Tom and others gifts!
And yes, we are all trying to be careful this year. It would be a terrible tragedy to be beaten by the G fund at the end of the year.

Look at what the situation was like last year at this time (rokids tally)
Rokid's Tally early Feb (http://www.tsptalk.com/mb/showpost.php?p=37447&postcount=8)
No one was beating the S or the I. You were the only one of last years top 7 to be in the top 20% at that time.
I personally was twice as far behind the S and I last year at this time compared to where I am now.
Don't be discouraged...It is the nature of the timer to slip behind the funds when they are making progressive gains. It's the sacrafice we make to not get walloped when the herd are riding their Ducati's into the valley.

The 3-4% a month is what I would like to do also.

Seems to me a lot of people don't remember or weren't invested in 2000-2002. Sometimes not losing anything is a good thing. The market can be very humbling. It can also make you look like you have a crystal ball at times. I know of one person who has had a good year so far, well, part of the year anyway, but last year he sucked all year. I see from this week's Tally, Nutt and Rod are definitely most improved from last year!

Or have they changed gears?

GaGal, when I read your post it really made me think about what I'm doing differently this year. Last year I was lucky enough to miss the May dive into the dirt. I think that made me overly cautious which drove me in and out of the markets when they were really in an uptrend, should have been in when I was out. Ended up between 11% and 12% should have done much better, like you. I follow the chart channels a lot more this year, up, down, up, down, if all of the other conditions are upbeat and funds are at the bottom (where ever that is) of their channel I'm in. I pay a lot of attention to energy, Economic Calendars (that's a big one) the dollar effect on the "I" fund etc. In other words I've been lucky but it seems to be working better for some reason. Just luck GaGal, no real system, just watching what's going on every day. I'm sure I won't be in the top 10 much longer, there are some really sharp traders on this web site and they will be leaving me in the dust before long.:suspicious:

Wheels, I'm with FundSurfer on this one. I'm pretty sure Trader Fred still feels confident about his system. Same here, and even though my horse stumbled out of the gate early this year, I won't be satisfied with less than a +30% return. I can remember a couple years back when people here would be patting each other on the back for getting a 10% return. I don't think that would fly anymore at this stage. Last year's old and new TSPTalkers have raised the bar for good. Onward and forward, TSPTalkers! :)

Yup. It dropped from #22 to #137 since that last buy and sell signal. I'm glad this is a marathon and not a sprint.

Yeah, it's wayyyy too early in the game to begin judging anyone's return or system. I'd say that should come on Jan 1st for the previous year!;)
This past week was a prime example of how folks can quickly climb or fall on the tally. Next week will once again shake things up.
I'm very comfortable with my return because it's the best I've been at this early in the year.
Previous years:
2006: +1.99% on 16 Feb
2005: -.10% 0n 14 Feb
No tracker for 2004 or earlier although I could probably back-date some. I began the TSP when it became available to the military. But, I did not begin to actively trade until I found TSP Talk in Jun of 2004.
God Bless:)

Rebuttal time. I wasn't going to because I feel like it just goes in one ear out the other all the time, but I figure since Mr. Wheels is attacking my system, I figured I would post actual facts, not crystal ball hocus pocus.
My YTD to return for 2005 was 11.62%. BTW, all this can be checked on the past tally charts. This was not a full year return but about a 6-month return because of a little "vacation" time out I received. I also had the highest 4th quarter return that year. My last 6-month return was in the top ten. The L2040 returned 7.91% that year.
My YTD return for 2006 was 13.03%. Again, my tracker was reset around mid to late July because of my challenge with Techy. My 4th quarter return for that year was in the top 10 and my 6-month return would of been also if I had been tracked long enough. Techy stop posting on 11\02\06. As of the end of Oct his return was 5.96% and mine was 6.56%. This was for a little over 3-months. Over the next two months I gained 6.47%.
This year my current return is .71%. This includes a disasterous one day of greed in the I fund when it lost 2.01% on that particular day. My system told me to get out the day before and I even posted this: http://www.tsptalk.com/mb/showpost.php?p=70676&postcount=2237
Not factoring in that day, my return would be 2.72% and this includes two missed opportunities because of divergent data. I have since added another indicator and believe this will help moving forward if it happens again.
So anyway, if spending most of 2005 and 2006 in the top ten represents a failed system, then that's what I have. Just follow techy and you'll be fine.
BTW, I hope you didn't follow him today..........................
Tom, I honestly don't know how you do it. This is obviously a "what have you done for me lately" type board...........

since Mr. Wheels is attacking my system, I figured I would post actual facts,
First of all I don't see where I was "attacking your system". The point I was trying to make is that no-one here has a system that has consistently rocked. By rocked, I mean has beaten or come close to beating not just the C fund but all the funds. By consistently I mean two years or more (preferably more). Even your claims don't really measure up. All 3 stock funds beat you last year and you beat only the C the year before that.
I don't have a system. I watch the fundamentals. I mix in a small amount of technical analysis. And I let those drive my intuition (I try to keep emotion out of it but it is not always possible). From 2003 until September of last year it served me very well. I beat the C in every year since 2003. However 2003, was the only one of those years that I beat all the funds. Since September of last year, I am getting my butt kicked. The S and I are up over 12 and 14% during that time. Even the lowly C is up over 10%. I am up about 5% during that time. That means in 5 months I've left over $50,000 on the table.
Every time somebody mentions that they have a system, I try to be very open minded. I hate leaving that money on the table. I would love nothing more than for someone on here to come up with one that consistently beats a majority of the funds. Trader Fred was the most recent entry in the field. He is failing miserably as far as I can tell. Everybody chimed in and said give it time, it's a marathon, not a sprint. I've given it all the time I can afford.
P.S. And no, I won't following Techy either.

What a handsome fellow you've grown up to be! Dress shirt and tie make a difference, don't they. Clothes make the man, my husband says. When we married 5 years ago, I brought him to the country (he was city boy).....he wore coat and tie every day to the office. I worked on him. Now, to dress up, he wears Khakis. Otherwise, its jeans, a cap to cover his balding head. Oh, he drove a Lexus then.....now it's a big ole pickup truck. I waved my redneck stick at him. As he says, lowest common denominator wins.......

Sorry you are having trouble opening the Weekly Tracker spreadsheet. Do you have Microsoft Excel 2000, XP, or 2003? You need that Excel software or the free Excel viewer. The alternative is the free “Open Office” software that you can download. What web browser do you use? Some members have problems opening the large (2.5 MB) Excel file, so instead they download it. Sounds like you need to download and install the free Microsoft Excel viewer.
You can download the tracker file by right clicking the "*Current Weekly Tracker" link, and then choose "Save Target As" from the drop down menu. In the next window choose the directory location (top or side of widow) where you want to save the file, then left click the "Save" button at lower right on window.

GeorgiaGal you're not the only one that had difficulty finding the names. They are tabs at the bottom of the page (You can see 12%'s tab at the bottom right). Hit the arrows in the far left corner of the screen to scroll the names to the right. The names go in alphabetical order.
Was this what you were asking about?
Thank you. I did find the names on the tabs at the bottom, by clicking the arrows on the bottom left.
But now I don't know what they correspond to or what they mean.

Your pixel and font setting may be interfering with you view. Scroll the tabs left or right then click on the tab name you want to view. I have my screen size set at 800x1024. However, a font setting on large might be problematic. As Show-me said, to move the screen left and right use the arrows in the bottom right. To move up and down use the bar on the right side of your screen.

Hats off to you...you've done very well for yourself lately and it's showing in your returns! I'm probably going to be more conservative on my moves in the near short term...need to protect my gains a bit!
I was curious what Swamp Dog did to earn 2.32% last week (went from 6.8 to 9.12)!
So I checked him out, and he has been sitting in 100% C since March 29.
Well, actually, there is a little tiny math error somewhere on the Tallys, because they Tally shows that C increased 2.23% vs. 2.32 % (3 to 5.23) - unless its my crooked eyes again causing a problem.
anyway, we thought we were hot with S and I, and he beat the pants off us all, (I think).

Thats due to the beauty of compounding. For the week, C fund went from $16.16 to $16.51 which is 0.35/16.16 = 0.0217, or 2.17%. Swamp Dog's YTD then is 1.068 X 1.0217 = 1.0912 or 9.12%. :)

Hey Ew,
(tee hee, Hey You!)
I know you're tired of this question but can you please explain the difference in the way you compute and I compute.
I had no paycheck this past week, thus no contributions.
To check my earnings I did:
COB 4/27 Balance - CoB 4/20 Balance = Gain
Gain/4/20 Balance = this week's % earnings = .99%
Your Comp = .28% for the week
I understand why I can't use my method for the year as a whole, because of contributions, but why isn't the week's earnings the same?
Thanks

Hi GG, Your math looks fine and it should give the weekly return for your account. I assume you are comparing your TSP account balances at TSP.gov. Are you sure there were no contributions to your account? It’s a shame the link for recent transactions only shows a maximum of three. The difference between 0.99% and 0.28% is significant! You should check for contributions.
I examined your fund allocations, times, and dates of posts made to your account and compared with the data in your tracker sheet. All data in your tracker sheet correctly reflects the dates and allocations made to your account thread. I noticed you made two posts for Thursday 4/26, at 7:14 am to 100% G, and then again at 11:35 am to 50% S and 50% I. The first post was ignored, and the second was input into tracker for COB 4/26. These moves recorded are in attached file. You should compare these with TSP.gov confirmations you receive on each transaction.

Hey Ew
So are you confirming that the forumula I used for computing my weekly earnings (4/27 COB balance, less 4/20/ COB balance = Gain, then Gain is divided by 4/20 COB Balance to arrive at yield% for the week) is the correct formula and should be the same as your answer so long as there were no contributions or other additions to the account during the week?
Thanks

Yes, that’s what I am saying. Because the difference is near quadruple (0.99% versus 0.28%), I suspect that there was a large contribution. A large contribution would increase the account gain ($), and the apparent return. The local Navy base workers were paid on April 20th, and the contributions to TSP were made sometime from the Thursday (4/19) before, to the following Wednesday (4/25). Here are some rough figures to estimate returns and account gains,
A $50,000 account would have a $495.00 gain if 0.99% (0.0099), or $140.00 if 0.28% (0.0028).
A $100,000 account would have a $990.00 gain if 0.99% (0.0099), or $280.00 if 0.28% (0.0028).
A $200,000 account would have a $1980.00 gain if 0.99%, or $560.00 if 0.28%
If one were making the maximum contribution of $15,000, this would equate to $577 biweekly. Add this to the government match on a $70,000 salary would add about $134 to the $577 for total bi-weekly contribution of $711. If the account value was near $100,000 and the return for a week was 0.28%, the return of $280 added to contribution of $711 would give a total account gain of $991. This equates to an account gain of 0.99% (991/100000 = 0.0099).

Add another $5,000 for over fifty and you are dropping some coins down the well - that's why I'm a DCA type. Buy'em at any price.
Your suspicions are right. I had my paydates mixed up in my head. And I am contributing the max of $15500, plus the max catch up of $5000 for the over 50.
My contributions (and the match) went into the account on 4/24.
You make a good auditor!

Actually, I'm doing away with the investment style classification in future Weekly Tallies. I'm sticking to a Return-To-Date ranking of member's account returns, fund returns, Sentiment Survey, and 20% Each. It will also show the date a member joined the tracker if after December 29, 2006. There will be a new Returns Tally worksheet at the beginning of the Weekly WebTracker, and a separate Weekly Tally report that will also include all TSPTalk accounts that are not in the WebTracker (TSPTalk Active, TSPTalk Inactive, TSP Trader, TSP Timing, and EbbChart System).
The investment style, and the statistics that rokid performed on the member returns was to determine if one style did better than others, and how fixed asset allocations faired compared to different trading styles. I do not plan on doing statistics on return data. The new Automated Tracker will produce the basic reports next year with little administrator input.
