Toy e-commerce is surging and analysts say Hasbro and Amazon will be winners

Online toy retail is expected to grow to 35% of sales in 2022 from 23% currently, with Hasbro Inc. better prepared for the shift than Mattel Inc. , UBS analysts say. "Mattel has historically had better distribution, but further investment in onmichannel could be limited given its constrained balance sheet," UBS said. E-commerce has been 18% to 20% of business for both businesses. "We believe toy online is still growing at 2X to 3X that of brick-and-mortar, with Amazon likely to become the third largest toy retailer in '19-'20," analysts led by Arpine Kocharyan wrote. UBS says the toy category has seen deeper discounts this year compared with last year. Hasbro shares have fallen 10.2% for the year to date, Mattel is down 29.5% and the S&P 500 index is now 3.8% for the period.
