Rob Arnott, founder of Research Affiliates, has built a business prodding the indexing community out of complacency. Arnott first made waves in the aftermath of the dot-com bubble, when he launched his firm and began to develop indexes. This, perhaps, doesn’t seem as revolutionary today as it did 15 years ago, when stock and bond indexes were virtually all structured in the same way—the largest companies held the biggest positions in them.
