I took the plunge and bought 5 Ethereum a few days ago to compliment my one bitcoin. I also bought 10 shares of GBTC for my Roth IRA. Now I just sit back and watch the fireworks each day.
Based on everything I've read lately it seem Ethereum is better managed, is becoming accepted by merchants more quickly, and the higher number of them in existence will keep the price lower and make them psychologically more appealing than bitcoin. I have little fear of either one crashing back to zero (having said that I've only invested funds I can afford to lose), the momentum/interest is still building and just in it's infancy.

I remember the TSLA IPO and how I told my wife I planned to buy a few hundred shares when it dipped below $20, but then didn't do it...I could have made even more if I'd just held onto the 3000 of shares of XM Radio (XMSR) I bought early on for about $3.50, but then sold for a 10% gain and watched it soar to over $50....I've learned my lessons, when you come across something appealing to the masses, don't hesitate, grab it! I don't want to kick myself a few years from now for not buying into blockchain early-on.

Nice gains again over the last 24 hours: CryptoCurrency Market Capitalizations (http://coinmarketcap.com/)

Ethereum and other cryptos continue to get hammered. I don't know if it's a symptom of the Aug. 1 Bitcoin Segwit (https://bitcoinmagazine.com/articles/bitcoin-miners-miss-first-bip-148-deadline/) taking down all of the cryptos, or just a bubble bursting.

It's either a really good buying opportunity for those who missed most of the run up, or the beginning of the end for them.

Since Ethereum was under $10 earlier this year and is currently about $150 we can still say it went too far too fast, but it is also down about 65% from its recent highs. This is a great battle between the believers and the non-believers, or rather the believers and the weak hands who want to be in but can't take the volatility.

Since I own a bunch of Ethereum now at prices over $200, I've become a buy and holder rather than a trader, which is not normally my style, but being a believer in the Ethereum / blockchain technology, I can't sell down here.

I'm looking to buy more eth but it's in a downtrend. When it breaks that I want to buy more. Also heard a podcast about Zcash which is supposed to be anonymous which bitcoin etc are just pseudo-anonymous. It seems to be doing well. Thoughts?

Bitcoin' (http://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/BTC-USD?utm_source=markets&utm_medium=ingest)s future is yet to be decided, and Ethereum (http://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/ETH-USD?utm_source=markets&utm_medium=ingest) is gaining on the uncertainty.
Ethereum, the second most popular cryptocurrency by volume, is up 9.15% in early trading Tuesday (http://markets.businessinsider.com/currencies/ETH-USD?utm_source=markets&utm_medium=ingest), trading at $224.34.

If bitcoin pulls back, which it is doing today, we could eventually see some of that money go into Ether.

I still have 0 bitcoin. Would get interested again at support levels near $3450 and $2950.

AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 Gaming And Ethereum Mining Beast GPU Launches, Sells-Out In Minutes

.....

The Vega 56 is sure to be a popular card with gamers, as our benchmarks showed it as a compelling alternative to NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1070 (https://hothardware.com/tags/geforce-gtx-1070). In addition, Ethereum miners (https://hothardware.com/news/ethereum-mining-fuel-30-percent-surge-q2-gpu-shipments) also have a lot to celebrate with the card, as new mining-specific beta drivers from AMD have really opened up performance (https://hothardware.com/news/amd-radeon-rx-vega-ethereum-mining) on Vega10-based graphics cards. The Vega 56 in particular put up some solid numbers, delivering a solid 36.48 MH/s (https://hothardware.com/news/amd-radeon-rx-vega-mining-block-chain-ethereum) when memory speeds were cranked to 1900MHz.

Coinbase has another site : https://www.gdax.com

You still use coinbase for deposits, etc., but then you can quickly transfer the money or cryptos to GDAX and trade. Spreads are 100% better. Limits, stops orders, and volumes, plus you see the "level II" type orders waiting out there.

Of course everything started tanking and it went down as far s $850 but I was able to sell it for $1022 when it rebounded. I then put in a limit order at $898 which got filled last night when it went all the way down near $750.

Bought some ETH today. Not trading at this time. Central banks under intense pressure and will fold in the not-too-distant future. Crypto's appear well poised to fill that void. Gold and silver are also important assets to hold as they will be used to provide stability in the currency market once the dollar is crushed and the CB put out of business. This info is out there if you know where to look for it. Russia and China hoarding gold and silver. Petrodollar is doomed. All part of the plan.

I'm not really the one to answer that one. Don't they all kind of move in unison?

Ethereum gets a lot of likes because of it's upgraded "DeFi" technology and upcoming iteration of Ethereum 2.0. Depending on what state you live in, you can make some 5% lending it.

Bitcoin is useless as a "currency" because of the fees and amount of time it takes to process a transaction. These are hard wired issues and cannot be fixed due to the size of the blockchain. I largely sold out of bitcoin in 2017 after their Bitcoin Cash fork. Had I left it in, it would be worth a lot more now, but nobody ever went broke taking a profit. At that time, the idea Bitcoin for buying stuff died since the fees for sending bitcoin would sometimes be 40-50% of the total transaction.

ETH seeks to fix these things. Some say it will bring Web 3.0.

Funny thing though, I noticed this thread has been dead since April 2018 just before it's first massive top. Ethereum probably has a better future than Bitcoin but with Bitcoin being the original, it's the one everyone knows and is most popular.

tsptalk

ETH doesn't have a hard cap like BTC.

ETC is more about the technology behind it's blockchain. When you use the ETH technology to send information, you have to pay the network.

Some say ETH will be used to create "smart contracts" which are essentially futures contracts on whether something will happen or not. A farmer can enter into a smart contract to protect against a bad crop. Bets on sports can be made without an intermediary.

I don't think it's there yet, but will be once this Ethereum 2.0 is rolled out.

I just noticed the Grayscale Ethereum Trust is getting the smack down today. Down 20% while the actual ETH is up.

Reason is the company is creating new shares which will drive down the premium. I mentioned in the Bitcoin thread how these ETF's trade at massive premiums. As those premiums normalize, people will sell shares while they still can collect the premium making for a double whammy. After the dust settles and the premium is closer to NAV, then it will be a better option for IRA's, etc.
