View Full Version : User Reputations

It seemed there was some confusion between user titles and and user ranking or reputations.

The titles are in place to recognize participation. Hang around and contribute to the conversations over the long term and your user title will reflect a "higher" title level. See this thread (http://www.tsptalk.com/mb/showthread.php?p=38901#post38901).

Now I have activated user reputation to address the concern some members had about titles; That is they thought posters were being rewarded for quantity and not quality. Both are important to a successful board so we now have something to reflect active participation and the quality of your input.

To give input on a user's reputation, simply use the scale in the top right of a post to approve or disaprove of a user's post.

Thanks,
Tom

A good message board has good participation and quality posts.

You decide if a member provides good content, helps others, answers questions, asks good questions (yes, novices can have a good reputation), etc. or on the otherside, are they putting other members down, giving misleading or useless information, completely off topic, offensive posts, etc.?

There is some artificial intelligence in this feature in that those who have been around longer, or post more, or have higher reputations themselves, will have more of an affect on others' reputation when they use it.

It takes a few clicks to move up or down. We've seen some move to neutral or down but I think it takes a little more to move up. We'll see some changes as time goes on.

FS, if you click on your "User CP" button you'll see the comments that are left by others. It doesn't tell you who made them though.

I've left this one for a couple people:

There have been many good posts written by members here the past couple of days / weeks. Have you been giving credit where due using the reputation feature? I know I forget myself on occasion.

Here's a reminder: Use the scale icon above each post on the right side to approve (or disapprove) of a post that deserves some recognition.

If you have any question, please let us know.

Thanks,
Tom

Tom, can you reduce the number of times you have to give out reputation "credits" "marks" "points" or whatever before you can give again to someone? I've found that on several occasions I go you add to someone's reputation for an exceptionally good post, only to find that I can't because I need to "spread some reputation around". I agree with this concept but just think the number of in between reputation marks should be lowered. JMHO.

tsptalk

OK, I lowered it from 8 to 5. I think the original default was 10 or more.

I hope that helps. And thanks FS. I think you give more reps than anyone else.

Also, I'd like to remind everyone to please use this feature responsibly. Someone gave me a bad rep for this post I made a couple weeks ago in response to someone who was thanking me for something...

You're welcome []. My pleasure - really! This is what I love to do. Now if only I felt the same way about my day job. I like that, but I love this.

Unless I'm missing something, this was an irresponsible use of the reputation feature. I've made a lot worse posts than that. :)
I guess it was their way of retaliating for something else.

How many points is considered "good"?

IMHO. The reputation button is not in sync!

The reputation button has: what do you think of ____ posts: agree or disagree?

Agreeing or disagreeing with a post (or action) is nada reputation issue!

1. [It's bad] If someone is stalking, inciting, and a real meanie, thats a reputation issue. i.e., a continued violation of the site rules.
2. [It's good] If someone is giving quality posts (bull or bear wise) thats a reputation issue. A bear opinion is just a different view of what a bull might see. i.e., the pro vs the con!

Remember: rep-u-ta-tion n. estimation in which a person or thing is commonly held......"Estimation" is the subject!

Lets get the REP button back in sync. If it's a reputation issue, please post your comments, good or bad. Especially if bad, so the member has a chance to correct. Otherwise it's just a blind slap!

This is a free pasture, open to both bulls and bears.

Trying to get it back in sync!

Well maybe this story will help!

The Cracked Pot

A water bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.

For a full two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water to his house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect for which it was made.

But, the poor, cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.

After 2 years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you. I have been able to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work, and you don't get full value from your efforts". The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, and I planted flower seeds on your side of the path.

Every day as we walk back, you've watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house.

MORAL:

Each of us has our own unique flaws. We're ALL cracked pots! But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so interesting and rewarding. You've just got to take each person for what they are, and look for the good in them.

All new users start out at neutral (0 rep points). We no longer will give negative reps to each other, so please use the positive reps when it is deserved.

Just a reminder that if someone post something good this is how you can thank them.

Look at the upper right corner of the post you will see a # of the post and a image of a balance scale. Click on the balance scale and a reputation window will pop up for you to write a message.

The blue is neutral where as the green means you have a positive rep. Blue is the starting point and is the absence of positive rep.

Okay, I give up, how do you view reputations left for you by others? I just learned about leaving these thanks to MrJohnRoss asking and RealMoneyIssues answering and I've been actively reading here for six months! :o This thread states to go to the "user Control Panel (CP)". I've looked and looked and can't find my CP :embarrest: and can't find any where to view these and apparently I have 120 points :D So much for Horse Sense! The good thing about this search is that I finally took the time to read the rules and guidelines. Everyone should refresh themselves with these. Thanks for the help.

Use the Settings link in the upper right hand corner of the web page or use http://www.tsptalk.com/mb/usercp.php

Scroll down until you see the 'Latest Reputation Received (120 point(s) total)' section and read what people say!

Oh, and thank you :)

you have to be logged in... look at the top right of the screen and click on "settings" .... a page should appear and you can read the notes left by others. If you want someone to know you gave them rep, be sure to put your name on it so they can return the favor when you write something they believe deserves "rep."

this hint deserves rep, so I'm expecting some from you. :D

Okay, NOW I see the "Latest Reputation Received (120 point(s) total)". Below that I see one "rep"...does that mean I have only recieved one? Not that I think I should have more, but the "120 points total" doesn't sound like one...do you get 120 points for one? Reps for you on the way!

I think that is true. You may have 1 "rep" but the points depend on who gave it to you. There is an algorithm that figures it out, but basically those with higher rep have more weight in their rep giving. But someone who gives rep to everyone might weaken their "weight". etc.

Thanks Tom! I guess I should stop throwing around my reps as being a Starter and now weakening them last week they probably are worth less than a Greek Bond! :worried: The one rep I have was from one of the heavy weights (Thanks Show-me!) so it makes sense that it was worth 120 points. I really should read more of the "owners manual" for this site, but I'm an engineer and therefore NEVER read the directions first. :D Actually, the best manual I ever saw (not read) was for an industrial piece of machinery and it had big bold letters on the cover that read, "IF ALL ELSE FAILS, READ THIS MANUAL".
