Hello Guys and Gals...

Hope everyone is doing okay...

I'm retired Air Force (2004) and 11 years civil service C-130 mechanic...found the early out option last December to tempting to turn down so for now life is purty darn good being my own boss (of course I'll deny that if you ask my wife!). Ended up in Georgia so I could enjoy one of my passions year 'round...riding my wide glide.

Like most I wish I had started contributing while in the military and found this fine website at the same time but I certainly could have done much worse. At this moment for this 60 yo, life is good and comfortable which is all I ever wanted.

I joined TSP Talk in June '14 and still learning from all the smart people here...don't ever expect to reach the level of some y'all. I realize the markets are anybody's best guess but your "guess" is consistently way better than my "guess".

Anyhow, just thought I'd give a shout out and say hello...

I too am retired AF (96) and have 18+ years fed time. I am curious (maybe nosy) did you pay your military deposit (buy back) and your thoughts about the decision to or not to.

When I retired from the Air Force in '04 (48 yo) I really hadn't planned on working again. So by the time I had started my civil service position six months later I was already accustomed to that end of month paycheck. In retrospect, I probably should have dug deeper into the financial pros and cons of both options but I have no regrets as it has turned out well. My wife and I budgeted our lifestyle around my military retirement and I started max TSP contributions while investing most of my government check in mutual funds and stacking the rest in the bank as a ready reserve. So after 11 years of working on the base I was offered $25K to resign my position...I gladly obliged them. I am currently postponing my retirement until I'm 62 (no age penalties) at which time I will officially retire through OPM and start my FERS monthly payments while I continue to grow my TSP account to use later down the road. Other than my 6 1/2 year mortgage I continue practicing a debt free lifestyle...my wife thinks I'm cheap...I like to think I'm frugal.
